I agree. I can't image how the desktop config could be getting corrupted or deleted by removing the update.
I haven't had to resort to this, but you may try restoring from a point before the bad update and then marking the bad update to "hide". Theoretically, it should work.
This isn't a matter of being right or wrong, but I will just make my case and let folks do as they please.
I can think of several BIG infections in the last couple years that have sucked not only production time, but confidential information from hundreds of thousands of computer systems...
