  1. Has anyone ever heard of pricing like this!?

Our customers come to us for our design, installation, and service skills. I supply signs at the best price I can for them, and they gladly pay those competitive prices (they have already looked up the price on the internet, so they already know what the prices are). We charge a bit more than...
  2. Has anyone ever heard of pricing like this!?

I would not be able to get a nickel more than $150.00 each. I have been doing this since the '70s and I know exactly what everybody else charges. There are some that add their value-added services to their over-all price, and are charging in the range of $5 – $6 a sq. ft. for regular 13oz...
  3. Has anyone ever heard of pricing like this!?

I can't afford to print my own banners. Both of those banners, 13oz. reinforced vinyl, hemmed and grommeted, would cost me less than $16 each (drop shipped to the customer – they are delighted to pay the shipping because it saves them the drive time). If I'm putting them up, I'll add the...
  4. What is everyones experience with Grimco

Not around these parts! Everybody in a 150 mile radius from me buys from the same wholesalers, and it is a race to the bottom as far as pricing goes (20% – 40% margin on buy-outs, 40% margin on raw goods). The money is made in installation and service.
  5. What is everyones experience with Grimco

Higher than some internet only suppliers, but their prices are decent if you are in their delivery area. I order over $100 I get free delivery (great for sheet goods).
  6. Who remembers the Gerber 4b?

I had a couple of those. I had a custom board built that I placed into a font slot and connected to the power supply (yes, it took a bit of electrical engineering and a soldering iron). You cannot simply plug into one of those things. There might be some older interface boards floating around...
  7. Has anyone ever heard of pricing like this!?

Silly. That means a 4'x4' (16 sq. ft.) would be 96, and a 1' x 16' (16 sq. ft.) would be 204 (I purposely left out the denomination because that wasn't included in the OP). Square foot pricing can be part of a pricing methodology, but adjustments must be made for the total amount of material...
  8. Can you decode this logo?

I look at it this way... More signs to make after these guys go out of business.
  9. RIP iMac Pro

You should probably retire that 3950 and install an 11th gen. Intel Core i9-11980HK. That will really jump start Chrome, and what it will do with Outlook is amazing, especially when coupled with 319 Tbps internet speed (unfortunately, only available in Japan at this time). The downside is you...
  10. Is it just me?

Those damn meth-heads. Back in the day, we wouldn't dream of showing up to work on drugs! Us responsible adults might take a few vicodans before work (prescribed for pain by a real doctor, so not drugs), and we would keep a bottle of vermouth in our kit (well, a little nip doesn't hurt...
  11. To all Newbies Part 2

What I do for fun these days is draw cartoons. I'll do a stack of them on copy paper (in pencil) then send them into this magazine in New York whose editor says she laughed her ass off but they aren't right for the magazine. I don't care. Sometimes I just circulate them around the office, or...
  12. To all Newbies Part 2

What I miss most is the magic. Back when I was handpainting signs, you had to be an artist. It was more like performance art - you had to be able to walk up and pull this stuff out of thin air. Like a performing musician it had to come off - not too obviously labored and with a full measure...
  13. Is it just me?

Emails are great for formal communication (replacing mail and faxing). Phone calls are better for communications requiring more complex interactions. I often prefer to call vendors and customers in order to tease out details that I am not aware of. For example, if I know I want part number...
  14. Horrifying and stuck on this logo

I was referring to quoting the customer one price, than invoicing for another. If you tell them up front it's cool.
  15. To print or not to print

I encourage my customers to use cut premium vinyl where appropriates (which is most of the time for commercial vehicle graphics). There are two related issues. One is that premium cast vinyl will last much longer (fading and durability) than any print. The other issue is effectiveness. Most...
  16. Looking for a font that looks like an egyptian font any hand letterer would use.

Funny! I actually hesitated before I mentioned this font. I don't give up my morel patch or my favorite sweet corn stand either!
  17. Does anyone use the SignCraft price guide?

I have just the opposite outcome! When I calculate materials cost, production time, equipment expenses and maintenance, and especially overhead, S365 and my other wholesalers come out to about half the cost from when I used to do it in-house. Not having rent to pay, machines to buy and...
  18. Horrifying and stuck on this logo

I don't know what planet you live on! If I "adjust" my invoices I'll likely just find myself in small claims court.
  19. Customer artwork

Advanced T-shirts makes a series of plugins for Corel that may work for you. Also you can generally get anything vectorized for $5 - $10 by finding someone on Fivver (very easy and usually very fast). Most of the time I just end up doing it myself (if it takes me less than 10 minutes I...
  20. Looking for a font that looks like an egyptian font any hand letterer would use.

I talked up Workhorse in another thread. I lean on it pretty hard, but most people can't guess what it is (nor are they inclined to). Just a great font that hearkens back to the days of utilitarian hand sign writing. Funny thing, LHF has some outstanding offerings. I have quite a collection...
