  1. Shop logo attempt

One last post... if the client allows me - I will get inspiration from signs that would follow the branding, architecture and hopefully get the attention of potential customers... Normally, designs don't fall out of my butt, this design is inspired by Jill's design, If I had not seen...
  2. Shop logo attempt

DISLIKED! WHY I OUTTA!!!! Where's the booger flick button!!!!
  3. Shop logo attempt

I played with it more taking various logos and seeing what they might look like in use on a truck and business card. If this was a real job, I would put more time into various layouts and design the logos with more polish/finish.
  4. Shop logo attempt

I use Illustrator CC... but Corel is good too. It's mostly me using the process (and working at sign shops where I had to learn to be really fast) Thanks!
  5. Shop logo attempt

I think the reason most look retro-ish is because his attempt was. Unless you know of a book or website where we can study her work, it's kind of hard to look up Betty Willis (all you really get is the Vegas sign) or another sign design legend who died the same day as her - Buzz Leming (He...
  6. Shop logo attempt

I wasn't gonna play with this, but Jill's logo inspired me to join in. I really dig the script she used and the retro feel. Anyway, logos should stand on their own, the "Since 1973" should probably not be included on the logos I show but being in the business that long... it's an...
  7. Shop logo attempt

Sign_noob Mastering Layout is a great book.... for layout. Not so great for logo design and building a brand. You want to know about priority, use of space, negative space, type, arrangement, color (in grayscale) typography on signage... then Mike Stevens book is a must. GET IT...
  8. Shop logo attempt

You should ask yourself... If this logo was next to a similar sign company, would it instill confidence? I know nothing about ABCO because he does not have a web presence but I'm guessing he's doing around 1-2 million bucks a year, thinking he wants to attract paying high end...
  9. I will not be getting my waxing (or my nails) done here.

Melrose District - L.A. When I was a kid, this area was the punk/new wave hangout. When me and my friends were bored, we would go there. I collected concert/club fliers since I was a designer, looked for work, eat at Pinks, Carney's, Cantors, the Original Tommy's... Anyway, we've been...
  10. I will not be getting my waxing (or my nails) done here.

By the way, before you say it's ghetto, another nail place down the street drives this... (okay, it's a lil ghetto)
  11. I will not be getting my waxing (or my nails) done here.

... cuz the customer is not always right, and we kinda have to say no sometimes.... By the way, nice lil' touch with the star above the "I"... nice way to gussie up a layout.
  12. Shop logo attempt

THAT'S AN OLD FAT LOGO! Now I'm an old/fat/ugly, broken toothed, pitted furry buttocked graphic designer, but I would never design a logo for the porky, furry buns me... I would design a logo for other me, "KING CHICKEN WING"! or "THE GRAND POOBAH OF (insert a skill or talent) What type...
  13. Switched to Mac

More funny is that a 5K iMac is $2500.00... you can't even get close to pricing a similarly spec'd PC with a 5K monitor... C'mon man, a 5K Dell monitor is 2500 bucks for pete's sake. You could buy a 5K iMac, get Windows, and you technically have a free computer (if you are paying for a 5K...
  14. sometimes customers just make me want to scream....

You could "accidentally" drive over it...
  15. Switched to Mac

We are a Mac shop. I dig the 5K iMac, I just can't stand the shiny screen. Broke my heart that they got rid of matte screens. A few months ago Gigi's 30" Cinema Display went out and after some back and forth with Apple, they sent her a brand spanking new 27" Thunderbolt Display. I plugged it...
  16. Attention all newbies

    :banghead:
  17. Big Banner For Shop!

Does your sign code allow for that? I believe you are allowed 40 sq. ft. (your banner is 80) Can only have it up 30 days at a time, 3 times a year. (probably need to coincide with some event) Need a temp sign permit. People have the same attention span outside as inside, they also like...
  18. Big Banner For Shop!

That is a hot mess... keep it simple. Even this layout will be hard to read at 30mph but it might get someone's attention. You might want to add a scale person to your layout, it will give you an idea how everything scales/proportioned and see where your layout may have legibility issues...
  19. Legality and etiquette question

Just saw the signshop websites... woof! I don't think it's a good idea to have crappy work posted in your portfolio by someone else when you can (hopefully) design better work. I also think that "stock" work is a dead giveaway because the area codes are in California and quite a few of...
