    Convert the font to outlines and then apply an offset [object>path>offset] In later versions of CS you can preview it. Play around with the sizes in inches or points until you get the desired offset

    what kind of file is your image? A psd or jpeg? Jpegs can expand to a much larger size when opened/placed

    I cannot imagine how that would matter. Coreldraw can have overlapping lines too and also has a pathfinder tool (maybe called weld?)
