  1. Suggestions Was just wondering what others might be doing..........................

If the guy would have come to me I would have changed $1348.00 for the whole order. Everything would be out-sourced. My cost would be $719 including use tax plus 2x hours my time. Any design charges extra. Chances are, however, they would go to Dee-Signs and get them for even less...
  2. Best Way to Install this Sign Packaga

Design your gaps to be the same size as a plastic 4' level (side or edge - your choice). Calculate where your first one goes, then use your level to line up and space the rest of them. Use velcro so that you can move/re-position if needed. I would use black gator foam to mount my prints...
  3. Are there any trade/wholesale companies who create custom wood signs?

Ask the client whether he would prefer to kill a beautiful old-growth Western Red Cedar over using plastics made from refinery by-products that will last for years and put very little strain on the environment. The exhaust from the logging equipment will have more impact than the plastic sign.
  4. Looking for local printers, short runs. Delaware

For me to drive twenty minutes each way and pick up anything costs my company $10 - $15 (60.8¢/mile per AAA) for around twenty miles, plus about an hour of time (at $75.00 hour). Total cost: $85.00 plus. If I send the jr. guy, who only costs me $25 an hour (burdened labor rate), then I can...
  5. Bad service from signs 365

Yeah, Illustrator 2019 sucks dog poop. Along with the dancing tools palette, many of their keyboard options have changed, and many of the default parameters have changed (such as when using clipping masks). I guess they are trying to make the controls more like the Photoshop controls for a...
  6. Bad service from signs 365

Not my experience. I have had a number of vendors screw up stuff, including S365. Every single time they have offered to re-print, and if time was an issue I can usually get my corrected work via next day, at their expense. If time is not an issue (it rarely is in my world), I don't push the...
  7. Looking for local printers, short runs. Delaware

Why Deleware? Are you planning on driving over and picking the printing up yourself? There are plenty of wholesale to the trade printing vendors that will roll your graphics into a tube and send it to you for less money than it costs for you to walk from your desk and start your car.
  8. Are there any trade/wholesale companies who create custom wood signs?

Does it have to be wood? If you're going to paint it, HDU and PVC are less expensive, last longer, are easier to maintain, and easier to finish. You would need to cut into it with a knife to tell whether it was made of wood or not. A quick google search will get you all the info you need...

  11. Company moving to Illustrator. Advice please.

You need to try HotDoor CADtools.
  12. Some clients...

I tell my design clients to contact me any time they need a copy of the files they have purchased rights to or a minor revision. I explain to them if it only takes less than 10 minutes or so, I will not charge them. If it is more involved, they will be billed at my standard hourly rate. It...
  13. Dealing with Removals

I could just see some dummy using a razor blade and Goof-Off. I can at least control that in the shop. Of all sign-shop jobs, I would love to outsource vinyl removal (I outsource most everything else), but that is one job I would be concerned about because you are being trusted with somebody...
  14. Dealing with Removals

Vinyl removal company? Nothing like that around here! I hope they are fully insured and assume all liability.
  15. Staffing Mix of $2M+ Shops

To answer your question, at the last shop I worked at doing $2 million plus, we had 2 owners (father and son-in-law), 2 office workers (wife and salaried office manager), 1 sales person/designer (me), son-in law also did sales, 2 full time CAD/CAM/production workers, 2 full time shop production...
  16. Staffing Mix of $2M+ Shops

Your labor and material costs are much higher than here in the States, but at least minimum wage workers can make a living. My wife and I pay $1200/month for health insurance premiums, usually max out our deductibles (another $4k) and pay several hundred dollars a month for co-pays and...
  17. Need Help Backlit and/or Dimensional Sign - help needed

Gino: It is hard for me to fathom that you can make a set of channel letters cheaper than you can buy them (unless you are running a full-scale production business). By the time you add materials, burdened labor, overhead (specialized equipment like paint booths, exhaust and air replacement...
  18. Staffing Mix of $2M+ Shops

Neil_se: It is impossible to fully answer your question without knowing how your business works. For a typical sign shop, you are really top-heavy with administrative jobs. Four "signwriters"? A sign writer typically stands at an easel hand painting with a brush, and does not need a designer...
  19. ShopVox - frustration beyond imagination - no way to list labor as non-taxable.
