  1. Color/Clarity problem..I think

The first thing I would say is don't change his RGB photo to CMYK. Just send the original jpg or tif file or whatever it was straight to the RIP. That will most likely fix the color shift and contrast problems. The RIP is designed to handle the processing from RGB photos to the CMYK inks. Doing...
  2. WTF

Had not seen that video. But Sedalia is full of signs like that. And LED display boards. That company may charge $15,000 for a flex face sign with a crappy design, but they sell LED boards really cheap.
  3. Designing for signs

Most of those look like the customer whose only question, when they had their secretary call all the sign shops in the phone book (or google search page), was, "How much for a banner....?" and they chose the lowest price. The only one that really amazes me was the channel letters. No matter how...
  4. WTF

I know where that motel is!
  5. Discussion Onyx processing files for printing and contour cutting

This happens when you check the box in the pdf export to convert spot colors to CMYK. You need to have the colors correctly defined as spot colors in your layout, and then choose the dropdown box to export colors as "Native". Otherwise, even Pantone colors will get converted to CMYK.
  6. Discussion Onyx processing files for printing and contour cutting

For the pdf export, change output colors to "Native". Do not check the box to export colors as CMYK.
  7. Font ID

Blue Highway or Roadgeek 2005 C will get you 99% of the way there. The capital letters in Prairie Ridge would need slight modification.
  8. Storing Vinyl

1" application tape. Always keep it by every machine that runs vinyl. Most of the vinyl we buy has a label inside the core, so have never found a need for labeling.

  10. Cut Vinyl vs. Printing

We do a lot of jobs with both printing and with cut vinyl. The choice of media depends on the application and the desired results. If you are having all kinds of problems with mistakes weeding or it takes you a long time, I suggest you improve your skills rather than complaining about the jobs...

  13. Question Printed Perf & Optically Clear Laminate

This. Except that we use Avery optically clear laminate on our Clear Focus 50/50. Our neighbor is a glass shop that we did a truck window this way six years ago and it still looks good. I change the one on my truck about every 2-3 years, and it still looks great when I take it off. But I like to...
  14. Question What type of material to Create Helicopter (or Aviation) N numbers?

Putting the numbers on an airplane or helicopter is a simple job (except for the ladders/walkboard if it's a tall plane). Just use high performance cast vinyl. Even for the silver with a black shadow. I cannot believe how the advent of printers has so seriously dumbed down the sign industry. All...
  15. Is optically clear overlam as long lasting as regular 2ml overlam?

Avery DOL1360Z is more expensive than their non-optically clear laminate. But it lasts just as long. We use it for wraps and decals and window perf.
  16. Arlon material with Mutoh

If it's DPF8000 we use the same heat settings as any other vinyl.
  17. Discussion 3rd Party Inks

There would be some peace of mind in that, but in my case, I can see where the first head or two they would probably say wasn't covered because the problem with the ink had not yet been identified.
  18. Discussion 3rd Party Inks

We used third party inks in a Mimaki JV3, after having stuck with OEM for a couple of years past the warranty. We enjoyed the lower price, and with the particular supplier we used the conversion was simple--the inks were compatible with the OEM so we didn't have to throw out all our ink and...
  19. Signs 365 my new go to for banners

If you can't make enough money making banners yourself, that is a clear indication that you are not charging enough for them. Here's a hint: The absurdly low wholesale prices charged by the internet suppliers are not even close to an indication of what you should be charging for a banner.
  20. Can I Laminate UV Inkjet Direct Printed Aluminum?

It the signs are white letters on black background, and you want longevity in the elements, the best materials would be black aluminum with high performance white cut vinyl lettering. Cheap and fast. If you cannot get the ,080 aluminum already painted black from your supplier, you can also do a...
