  1. Where could I get this Lightbox?

Is this a chain restaurant? Either way, it looks custom to me. You can use stock extrusion or cut up some angle, weld, bend the returns, fashion an attachment to the post to what's existing... one question, if this is electrical, do you need a contractors license to mess with it?
  2. Why so much hate??

I thought sign makers hated architects, designers, interior designers, color consultants, feng shui specialists, newbie sign makers and each other more than brokers.
  3. Floor standing sign: How to weigh it down

What size is the sign or sign holder going to be? What material is called out for the upper portion? I have designed some sizable stanchion bases using 1/2" aluminum plate, and some using steel. Hopefully it's ADA compliant too, there are specific guidelines for protruding objects.
  4. New to Illy. I would like to perform a simple repeat command.

I use CadTools step and repeat. You can define the columns, it will do it to exact distances from the center of the edge, and even to a scale.
  5. Consultant made partner nixed after 2 years

What did the original contract say? As a consultant, you have to spell out what they get, and what you get. But if you were a true 1099 independent contractor, and the contract did not specifically address who owns copyright, they can take it to court, but there is no sure fire way of telling...
  6. Customer changes mind after approving proof and receiving banner.

If you look at the proof as a thumbnail, it's not that bad, click on the pic, then zoom in, it looks like crap. If the client designed the banner, and they are a pain, that is their problem. If you designed it: Good customer (redo for free) A layout like that would never be presented from me...
  7. Adobe's new pricing strategy

Yeah but the later versions of Quark sucked. People switched to InDesign because Quark ended up being a bloated crash-fest with crappy .pdf support and garbled legacy file support. It plain ol' didn't work.... I still have not had the nerve to chuck all my upgrades and original box of Quark, but...
  8. Adobe's new pricing strategy

Yeah I got a postcard about that a few weeks ago. I just found out about this upgrade thing on this thread, I don't think every Adobe user knows this. It would in Adobe's best interest to give long time users time to adjust.
  9. Adobe's new pricing strategy

I seen no problem with this policy if they ease people into it... like making CS6 (and maybe 7) transitional so it gives legacy customers time to catch up. But this seems like a bad move. I don't see many designers switching to Corel anytime soon because the cost of learning a new software...
  10. how to unlock a file!

I know illustrator real well, but I have gotten tripped up on designer files with layer locking more time than I care to admit...
  11. Latex in hospitals/schools?

In a hospital, with all the regulations... in California we have OSHPD, I would worry about fire rating than what is squirting out of the print heads.
  12. not enough?

Why not have a lil fun with it?
  13. Reflective text and background?

Exactly, if this guy called me up and said I need a reflective sign with black letters on it, you have to know what type of sign it is, where it is mounted, and the copy to see if it's actually required to meet some standard, before I can determine what material to recommend.
  14. Reflective text and background?

Part of my job is to help shopping centers that have large vehicular wayfinding to maintain the MUTCD standards because of liability issues, i have also design quite a few city wayfinding and street name sign programs so I sometimes have to make reports, show them specs, make material boards and...
  15. Reflective text and background?

Yes, AND there are clear standards for that, those standards are maintained by ASTM, and occasionally ANSI/ISEA. Simply stating that the colors have to be maintained is only a small of making a compliant sign, by using materials within the guidelines and within specified standards, really makes...
  16. Reflective text and background?

I love general code references, there is much more to it than that casual copy and paste... Like all bloated government standards, there is a standard for maintaining that "similar color" I would look at http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/htm/2009/part2/part2a.htm#table2A03 Know your retro...
  17. Reflective text and background?

What type of parking lot sign? The legal type like accessible and other code signs? or wayfinding, lot ID's? A typical street sign using the latest MUTCD must have a reflective background and copy. If you have seen a newer street sign, you will notice that the whole sign will reflect light, and...
  18. ADA braille signs - need help

This seems small, is this the size the fire inspector gave you? That type of sign usually is a minimum of 12" x 12" with non-glare finish Usually there are type face requirements. On the floor designation, it's 5" cap height and a certain stroke width. On all other type - usually "ROOF...
  19. ADA braille signs - need help

Tactile and braille is not required for that sign type. --------- There are other signs that usually go in that area. A floor designation sign inside the stairwell (just a floor number and at the floor where you exit, the floor number and a raised star) There is probably supposed to be a...
  20. Substrate suggestions

Overhead/hanging signs also have ADA specs... If you are in Washington state, then ADA is part of the building code and there is more to lose in your state than most. It is my understanding that Washington is the strictest state when it comes to ADA compliancy. ADA is in California's building...
