I get Bodoni Antiqua Medium for the lower case letters. The "G" is the only wrong character and it could easily be modified be stretching the chin higher.
The segmented vectors have been a problem for years. It happens when a compounded shape is exported out of CorelDraw as an AI or EPS file. The best workaround I've ever found was to release the compound in Corel before export and then compound again within the application you import it into.
You can extract the vectors by opening the PDF in Illustrator and copy/paste them into a new workspace. I don't think the font itself can be extracted.
Keep in mind that medium weights are more legible than bold weights although bold is better for catching the eye. The most legible fonts also have an average height to width ratio of 90%.
As you said, italic is obviously different with serif styles. Most sans serif styles are more appropriately termed "oblique". The differences are much less obvious and are more relegated to optical adjustment to eliminate certain distortions that happen when a roman version (vertical version) is...
