It sounds like he is just fed up with dealing with the manufacturer.

v10 profiling is all automated so nothing to go wrong really.
Setting ink limits is the only place you can screw up.
Print out the advanced swatch, and decide which ink combinations are too high.
Check the onyx online help.

We cut 3mm shapes like that with a trimming knife all the time.
I think you should probably harden up a little.
Do a light pass to set the path then a couple of heavier cuts and you're done.
