  1. registration mark error

i assume by '1 1/2 short' you mean an inch and a half. The first clue would be you saying that this occurred longer jobs. How long is a 'longer job' to you? Regardless, longer being the case, the plotter probably stops 1.5" short of the second mark because the print is 1.5" longer than it...
  2. Metallic Vinyl

Here's a couple of pictures. The ding on the tailgate is courtesy of the dim-bulb at the feed store dropping a bale of hay so that it slid down the tailgate. The pictures do not do justice to the actual colors. Printed on a Mutoh 1204 and contour cut with a Graphtec FC700. For a profile I...
  3. Metallic Vinyl

Vinyl of most any sort is pretty much inherently printable with most any flavor of solvent inks. If you're going to print on metallic vinyl the only one you need to consider is silver since you can create any other color merely by printing it. 3M makes a very nice air release silver comparable...
  4. Great post on the process behind Garcon Grotesque

Rest assured that there is no power on this planet capable of forcing me to use it. I have menials that see to such things Certainly. But whacking it out on a sign isn't one of them. Ah yes, when the typographical Philistines decided that whatever they did to brutalize type was...
  5. Great post on the process behind Garcon Grotesque

Unfortunately Garcon Grotesque, like it's ancestor Copperplate Gothic, is as ugly as a ba$tard cat and especially hideous when made sufficiently large as to bring the gratuitous serifs into focus. Every time I see Copperplate used larger than maybe 12 point, I have to stifle a gag reflex and...
  6. Dinosaurs?

I always thought that they were dinosaurs when they were first introduced. The incredible waste, figure 95% of the materials involved end up in the trash can, and the insane process, makes for what has to be the most inefficient way to make a sign yet discovered. It's a passing wonder that the...
  7. Sliding scale discounts

Perhaps I should have stated it this way... (max-min)+(min*area)+(this and that) The equation does not need the extra parentheses surrounding the min*area since, by convention, multiplication [and division] is performed before addition [and subtraction]. What you were doing was performing the...
  8. Frosted Vinyl Help

It has little to do with whatever app tape you use, it's all squeegee technique. First, let the squeegee put the media on the substrate. Always, Then when you squeegee always, as in always, start with the squeegee completely on the previous pass. The move the squeegee in one motion, do...
  9. Sliding scale discounts

One more time... (maximum-minimum)+minimum*area+substrates+etc. Area is the size of the work. In my shop it's a square foot or fraction thereof. Maximum is the maximum you'd ever charge for one unit of area. My max currently is $24. Minimum is the least amount you'd work for per...
  10. Need a BIG scanner

Any reasonably equipped blueprint shop should be able to scan this for you. Even if they have to do it in a couple of pieces you can easily stitch them together. Trying to shoot it with a camera will produce less than stellar results. That's why they make scanners.
  11. DTG Printed T Shirts, Quote Needed

I'm in need of someone, anyone, to give me a quote on DTG printing 200-300 t shirts. Single panel, maybe 9x10 or so. Thanks...
  12. logo critique

What is all that crap supposed to represent? The inane swoosh and the ghastly Crilee not withstanding, a logo is supposed to symbolic at a glance. Spelling out the actual name of the entity as the main element and cross hairs on a map of enemy territory, or whatever the hell it's supposed to...
  13. Opinions on logo...

If you have to explain it then it's not working. Gun sights, metaphorical or actual, mean guns, shooting, target acquisition, etc. Only via tortured abstraction do them mean 'precision'.
  14. Price of gasoline, petroleum.. etc.

Do you ever wonder why it might be that when our current friends in the middle east crank up oil production it's seen as a solution to the problem but when anyone suggests that we expand oil production here in the USofA the notion is always treated with scorn and a frenzy of rationalization in...
  15. Price of gasoline, petroleum.. etc.

Nonsense. Western civilization has evolved as it has with the burning of cheap and plentiful**hydrocarbons as a major factor in the shape of that civilization. You cannot effectively redesign civilization by following your smarmy and rather self-righteous advice. This will not move...
  16. the sky at night

And, as an added bonus, if you look due east about 10-20 degrees above the horizon there's a reddish light which is Mars. The red part sounds cliche but red it is.
  17. How do you price vinyl?

For material you charge for what you have to unroll to do a job. Including leaders and trailers. Then it becomes very simple, you charge by the linear foot of material, rounded off to the next foot. Once unrolled the media never gets back on the roll.
  18. Contour cut problems

What, exactly, do you mean when you say "either not cut at all or would not cut the desiered [sic] cut area"? Will the plotter cut at all? Are you using manual or automatic registration marks? Does the plotter attempt to read the marks? Explain exactly what is going on, including the...
  19. Quote Request! Large Banners

If you didn't want anyone to know this was in the Phoenix area you really should have blocked out 'Bell Road' on the panel for the Ford dealer.
  20. Printing JPG image problems

To what is your rendering intent set for bitmaps?
