  1. square foot pricing?!

Nothing wrong with pricing by the square foot and there's absolutely everything wrong with having a simplistic per square foot price. I use a simple algorithm that integrates all of the pertinant data into a square foot price for a specific size, substrate, and media quality. It yields a...
  2. AVATAR.... Have you seen it?

Please point out anything this particular bob ever said which wasn't true and/or was gratuitously negative. Perhaps you might want to contemplate the difference between being critical and being negative. I happily admit to being critical as well as understanding that the only value in the...
  3. AVATAR.... Have you seen it?

While you might be awed by the animation, if that's the sort of thing that awes you, it's just a cartoon. Different than Steamboat Willie in degree but not in kind. I wouldn't walk across the street to see it. It's a movie, it makes whatever statement the production staff wants to make. I...
  4. color question

Really? Get close to a day-glo orange. You can get close to some colors. With others you can't even get in the same time zone.
  5. Vinyl printer??

$15,000 to $20,000 to start for a decent printer, attendant software, and this and that. Any less than that and you're just dicking around. Then you'll spend a year plus or minus, miles of media, and gallons of ink figuring out just how to use the all stuff you bought in any reliable and...
  6. color question

Here's what I did, coincidentally for 651 colors as well... First I printed a complete Pantone chart. Then I matched the 651 color samples to the Pantone number I deemed to be the closest match. I constructed a swatch table of just those colors. If you go this route, try to do the matching...
  7. color question

Not necessarily. While there are functionally almost infinite colors you can print, there is also an infinity of colors you cannot print. You printer operates inside of a specific color space or gamut. If the color you're trying to hit is outside of that space, you'll never get there. Think of...
  8. Re Drilling Holes

If the wall is broken, fix the wall. If the sign is broken fix the sign. To do otherwise is to break something that's sound to accommodate something that's broken. Regardless of what you do, know that it's 'voila' not 'wahla'.
  9. Profanity on wraps???

Yes. But I question your phrasing. Law, at least good law that has a snowball's chance in hell of withstanding any sort of challenge, tells me what is proscribed, it does not tell me what is allowed. Moreover it must tell me specifically and without any vagueness. If I were to do so, it's...
  10. Profanity on wraps???

That's one of those idiotic things that people, who wouldn't know a right if it bit them in the ass, are fond of saying. A right is something that is impossible to violate. Especially by someone else exercising an actual right of their own. If something is possible of violation then it's...
  11. Profanity on wraps???

Then don't use any in public. It's a marvelous Good Thing that you are not in a position that allows you to inflict your rather provincial prejudices on others.
  12. Profanity on wraps???

Illegal? Just what law is being broken? Some provincial ordinance of someone's tribal elders that would instantly crumble under first amendment scrutiny? Moreover, there's no law being broken by uttering certain sounds on radio or television. There are only possible violations the various...
  13. Profanity on wraps???

True, but freedom of speech is absolute with or without common sense. Common sense dictates that one should be circumspect in these things. Freedom means that circumspect is nice, even admirable, but not necessary. And certainly not enforceable. As far as the rationalization of 'protecting...
  14. The erection....

Having build more pole barns that I care to remember, all of which are still standing well as far as I know, I see a number of things you might have done a bit differently... You should have used 4x6's for your supporting line poles, not 4x4's. Far to easy to bend 4x4's. You should have...
  15. Need desperate help! PF correct on one side and not the other??

Ink starvation might be a first guess. For whatever reasons. Dampers, blockage in the lines, pumps, capping station seal, whatever. What happens if you print something smallish but way over on the left side of the media? It that prints OK then it most likely is ink starvation. If not then you...
  16. Hate to knit-pick but......

It's more than just nostalgia. All of the rules of typography have their roots in metal type and the concept of a type body. The rules, guidelines actually but break them at your own peril, evolved as movable type evolved and, for the most part, exist because of the inherent physical limitations...
  17. How should I print this?

If you're not printing some monochromatic job where the print is darker than the stock you print on white. Period. The only thing you can print on black media is black. If you regard this as 'wasting' ink, you're not charging enough and/or you really don't understand printing.
  18. Hate to knit-pick but......

Actually it's synecdoche not metonymy. Synechoche is using a part of something to refer to the thing itself, as in 'hired hand' for a workman. Metonymy is using something associated with something but not a part of it to refer to the thing, as 'step on the gas'. All metonymy is synecdoche but...
  19. I printed type 2 mark by accident - Q54

Type 2 uses lightly less media than type 1. Most people routinely use type 2. As far as sensing and accuracy, there is no difference.
  20. Contour cut problem

Have you checked the sensor offset calibration on the plotter? This being off a taste is the most likely cause of a constant error. That the error changes in the direction of media movement would indicate that the media feed compensation also is not set properly.
