Why do you find that unfortunate?

Nonsense. I just bought two more LHF fonts in the last couple of weeks and there they are, right there in my system fonts folder where they belong. No mysterious programs, no secret processes, no clumsy schemes. Just a couple more open type fonts in the directory. Just like all the others.

Why not just network the plotter or, failing that, save the cut job on the machine where it was created and import it on the machine that drives the plotter? Just because a job is created on one machine doesn't mean you can't move it and run it on another.
