Looks like you may be mixing color spaces. More than likely, your AI doc is in cmyk and your photo is in rgb. Convert the photo to cmyk in photoshop and resend. You can also save the file out as a PDF x1a

When we notice that there is a bit too much "fray" for my liking, I use a small hand torch (like this) and quickly go over both ends of the roll and burn them off. Takes just a few seconds and you don't have to worry about the fibers anymore.
