Have used lightly expired cartridges before in a 5500. No problem whatsoever. I don't think this is your problem. I dunno, I've seen crazy messages from this printer before, maybe reseat all the cartriges or tell the printer you're replacing the cartridge and just plug the same one back in...
Do you have Photoshop? if so, open in PS and save as tif. Or I think you could export as a tif from Illustrator. Then open the new file in Flexi. Gets it out the door!

I would ask the owner if the is a log book or service record for the printer. Maybe try to find out the dealers name and try to find some info that way. How old is the printer, is it still under some type of warranty?
I don't think they have a CARFAX or something like this.
