  1. The Bad Wrap update

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess they both are using Illustrator because it fits their design style, not because they're stuck in it. :thumb: Way to insult them guys!
  2. The Bad Wrap update

I was mostly stirring the pot. I know they're the same color engine, InDesign has better controls and access to that engine in some ways. I would realistically never use it for a wrap. We're an all PDF/X workflow anyway though :). Colorado I get what you're arguing -- that designers who are...
  3. Another 'Sign Shop' just offered to let me buy him out.

So jealous, good on you for taking the time! Family first. :notworthy:
  4. Customer Designed Wrap File Size dpi?

My thoughts exactly Josh. A $1000 off the shelf Dell can handle designing at those resolutions. Heck for some tradeshow/point of purchase/interior graphic stuff I'll max out the raster ppi at the max print dpi of the particular printer, just because I can.
  5. Another 'Sign Shop' just offered to let me buy him out.

Normal, and you're right, it's only worth what the equipment is worth.
  6. Mimaki Latex printer

I hope so, the market needs all the competition it can get. The HP equipment isn't all about the ink though it just runs and runs without much fuss and Mimaki is playing catchup on that front as well. At the price point the HPs sell at it makes more sense to buy three instead of one Mimaki and...
  7. spectrophotometer - any good for CMYK?

The i1 publish pro is in the newest line from x-rite, the gretag macbeth i1 proof uv photo is a slightly older rebranded x-rite model being sold with a removable uv filter (which they just about all come with now I think, check though).
  8. Customer Designed Wrap File Size dpi?

I don't believe in overkill and prefer "walk up" quality on a wrap. On stuff I design in house the raster elements are at least 300ppi. Hence my statement about how we can't know the op's situation, every shop has their own methods, quality standards and equipment limitations.
  9. The Bad Wrap update

Name and save the paths in Photoshop, assign them as clips if you want. When you import into Illustrator, use the advanced import options and you can get those paths to come into Illustrator as editable paths / clipping paths. I prefer .eps templates and work mostly in Illustrator for this type...
  10. Customer Designed Wrap File Size dpi?

How are we supposed to know your capabilities? 150ppi at size minimum. You're still going to have a few hours of fixing it even if it's the correct resolution, learning to design for curved surfaces isn't something people get right on the first shot. Even with customer supplied artwork we...
  11. spectrophotometer - any good for CMYK?

Get an x-rite i1 publish pro
  12. JPG -> Embroidery -> Vector

Sign industry bias, Corel has a strong grip due to the history of having better CAD like tools, "combative" threads on the subject all the time.
  13. How's business?

Humans are collectively cyclical, managing that is the hardest part of any business. Helps if you're such high quality that they'll wait for an opening (and I know insignia and Colorado are). Good problems.
  14. I cracked the code

We always use Oracal 3951-RA but supposedly the new(ish) 3551-RA is good for trailers and box trucks, can handle rivets and such just not complex curves. Tempted to try it sometime but really prefer to just do quality work and not have worries down the road.
  15. How's business?

January was our best ever January, February feels slow for me (design wise) but it's not slow overall, lots of work on the floor.
  16. Lease on equipment

Smart leveraged debt is what allows for explosive growth and progress. Anyone with half a clue understands this. Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc. all built with leveraged debt (most often in the form of venture capital). Same goes for basically every major successful business and...
  17. Thick paper stock for coasters?

I'd guess it's some sort of sheet cork (probably synth cork these days) product with a coated paper print side for use with flatbeds, no idea where you'd get it though. Or do you mean the stuff that's just like 20 pressure laminated sheets of paper? Either way, check with flatbed suppliers.
  18. Color Calibration

x-rite i1 publish pro is what you want. http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=1467
  19. GoToMyPC or LogMeIn.

LogMeIn has a product that makes using Remote Desktop easier as well, basically sets up a VPN very easily. Also free. https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/features.aspx
  20. Trying new ideas

I'll add that your About page is the second most important page, don't just fill it with straight "We are these guys", use it as another sales conversion opportunity. Sell yourselves and interlink to galleries and sales pages where appropriate and natural. Plus it should have physical address...
