  1. Acrylic letters with a flowing moving color spectrum behind letters

I'm with Burton, if it's interior, talk em' into a monitor or tv, you can use a USB stick for whatever you want on the screen to make them fully self contained. They'll do so much more than rigging up lights and a controller, and you can change or edit whatever you send to the screen, any time...
  2. Graphics Question

Just request what they're providing up front for new customers, or those you have had issues with. Bigger jobs are less problematic, more flexible, it's the little jobs for small businesses, individuals, etc, that usually don't understand what's needed for printing, who designed it in some off...
  3. Raster and Vector Image Customer Rant

You only need 3 or 4 more descriptive words, and it could be a product description on Amazon :toasting:
  4. Graphics Question

You can't always get what you need up front when they're just shopping around, but they usually want some sort of pricing to make sure it's within their budget. On a big project, a little design time is a negligible difference, on smaller projects, having to up-charge because artwork isn't...
  5. Amazon, UPS, FedEx

We must be finally catching up to the rest of the world. Amazon building a distro ctr a few miles from the shop, they're so anxious to get it operating that as soon as some of the land is prepped they said they'll be setting up massive tents to operate out of till the building is constructed...
  6. Graphics Question

Asking for artwork before even giving a quote is the best approach, something we always push for. That way you know what you have to work with, determine if they even have artwork that's usable, or not, quote accordingly for any design time, and give an accurate price. Requesting it right up...
  7. Graphics Question

OK, so I did this (upper) in just a few minutes, so it's rough. Just draw one candy cane, keep duplicating it, and fit the pattern & how they're stacked. When you have all the candy canes laid, group them and apply an outer glow in red to the group. Add the text, and yer' golden. The canes are...
  8. Wrap material suggestion for color change

Agree... I'll use Vvivid's architectural films, textured leather, woodgrains, etc, the stuff few companies offer. And it's cheaper than Ni-Doc for the more budget jobs. It's great for small/ oddball jobs or accents, but they'd never be my go-to for anything large or full wraps.
  9. Customers in production areas

Just get a scarier looking dog than mine....
  10. Need Help Printing these little Dot Gains

Solvent and Ecosol inks use a glycol base, so they shouldn't freeze, but the TrueVis inks eliminate a lot of harmful chemicals, so I don't know if they will, or if it'll cause them to become unusable. However, inks can crystalize when frozen, and be subject to condensation forming in the bags...
  11. Decal with business card slot

True, but all I did was a quick search and grabbed the first one I found, I'm sure there are many options cheaper. I got squirreled because I liked the holder rather than a decal, I distract easily...
  12. Decal with business card slot

You could go with media holders like these. Easier to change out than decals. I know there's all kinds of these on the market, this was just a quick search/ first thing that popped up. Used to use something similar back when I was doing displays, but they were black acrylic...
  13. Customers in production areas

Here the shop is separated, but there's just a partial wall between the reception area and the graphics area & offices. We get very little off the street business, but when people show up, there's no receptionist, so they usually just wander into the graphics area, unless the dogs greet them at...
  14. 48C Lifting

You got lucky in the past, not allowing paint to fully cure is just asking for issues. With the way paints are getting formulated for easy clean-ability, vinyls are having a harder time sticking to them even when fully cured. A std non-PVC calendared like 48C will shrink more, and quicker than...
  15. Install halo lit letters on wood fence?

They probably came back in desperation because every other shop they contacted told them the same thing you did, or passed on it for the same reasons. As set in their ways as they seem, it's a no-brainer to figure out why the development is such a permit nightmare.
  16. Install halo lit letters on wood fence?

Besides fence boards not being very solid, looking at the gaps between the boards on the fence, the private lot behind it is gonna get a lot of streaks of light shining through using halo's. Don't know if that'll be an issue, but something else to consider. Putting another structure in front of...
  17. Happy Thanksgiving - plans?

Thanksgiving is traditional. Wife makes some of the best turkey ever, just gonna eat till I pass out today, repeat daily with leftovers till they're gone. Christmas I usually get the kitchen and make lasagna using my grandma's recipe. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!
  18. Hiring Designers for my Sign Company

Wish I could agree it's that easy. You're also creating and designing logos, re-creating logos and other elements in vector that a customer can't furnish, it all takes design talent, plus knowledge of printing, working with color gamuts, materials, etc. Plus there's always those pesky deadlines...
  19. Looking for a poly material replacement

Big Systems out of WI has a pretty big selection of blockout films for roll-ups. They do have the grey backed, use that all the time, prints fantastic, but I think all the aqueous is white front & back. Don't know how difficult it is to ship stuff from down here, but here's their link...
  20. Display lightboxes - would anyone use static cling as only printed graphic layer

Test it first. Used to do some retail displays like that for one chain of stores so they could swap out promotions, but these went on the front of a lighted panel. Once we found the right combination of materials it worked OK, I didn't like it much, but they liked them. Rather than static cling...
