Nobody has mentioned the walls yet, but the bad one is on vinyl siding, which absorbs and retains heat more so than the concrete block. Block has the ability to dissipate the heat better.

A couple of additional reasons:
- Competition: manufacturers are always in need of outdoing their competition in order to survive in the marketplace, hence the ever changing models.
- New and cheaper technology is making the "old ways" of doing things obsolete.
- "New" replacement...
Still not buyin' it. I've spent 30 years in manufacturing, and I'll be the first to say that a lot of good ideas stay under wraps.
The tools allow me to be run ahead of the dogs in my pack, and they allow me to compete toe to toe against the bigger dogs of another pack.
On one hand...
In this age of technology/manufacturing democratization, things can happen quickly and once a supplier's competitor sees there is no patent, then it's a free for all. I'm sure there are dozens of people out there with 'secret weapons' that have never seen the light of day beyond the four walls...
