  1. What's Your Personal Favorite Tool...?

Not to be a spoiler, but over the years we have developed four or five specialty tools/machines that aren't available anywhere (former background in tool & die). And if you saw them, you'd not recognize what they do...but once you see them in action, you'd wonder why you didn't think of it in...
  2. What do I need summa

Give epiphany a fighting chance. Sometimes it blindsides us and it's up to us to figure out the rest...no matter the odds of success or failure. Hell, Thomas Edison blindly followed false hope...I've followed false hope...we've all followed false hope at some point in our lives. If not, then...
  3. What do I need summa

I'm going to fiercely defend the OP here and re-state the fact that this is the newbie thread. It is neither the Business Management nor the Entertainment thread, yet it is surely being treated as though it were. The OP is a newbie...as in "Hey folks, I'm just getting started here and need a...
  4. What do I need summa

Yeah...that's what I used to say whenever someone like this came along...until. The year was 2001, I'd just been let go from a vocational teaching job (Manufacturing/CAD Design) I dearly loved, but honestly could not handle...especially the last year when I was forced to teach a subject that...

  6. Read The Photo...

    Food for thought...
  7. Transferring fonts and preferences to new computer

For TT and OT fonts, I like Suitcase Fusion. Any Gerber fonts can be dropped into the Gerber font folder. JB
  8. Laser engrave an image onto the back of a guitar...

Oy! They're removing a lot of finish there...not to mention the stress relieving/creating issues. JB
  9. printing decals for 3M

Makes one wonder who might be running them through the printer (backer side up) and taking care of that problem themselves....
  10. Font help - Traced from routed acrylic letters

You should look at getting this: https://www.granitecitytool.com/storefrontCommerce/itemDetail.do?item-id=5280&order-quantity=1&item-index=0&customer-item=2907-0007&order-uom=EA&warehouse-id=6&item-number=2907-0007 It's what we use in the monument industry to take rubbings of memorials...
  11. Good fonts with low anchors

I agree, using curves is best. I use AutoCAD ("start, end, direction arc")to trace and I rely heavily on using curves instead of a multitude of short segments. The process of reducing nodes, for sake of "fewer nodes" doesn't yield the same effect. JB
  12. Good fonts with low anchors

The example shown is surely an easy one. I've found that nodes typically multiply whenever text is imported after it has been converted to curves (outlines). JB
  13. Good fonts with low anchors

Fewer anchor points = jagged letters. The only issue I seem to have with a Gerber GS (no on-board ram) is large curves. There is a slight delay while the data buffers, but it doesn't take all that long. I would rather sacrifice a bit of time for good, smooth lettering. JB
  14. Buying a second hand cutter

Obviously a bit off topic, but we've purchased all four of our used Gerbers on eBay (photos only, no testing) and they've worked well. I guess you could calculate the cost of a "worst case scenario" and compare that to what something new would cost. One other option would be to purchase a...
  15. Best Efficiency Improving Tips for your Sign Shop

Take a look at these: https://www.crcpress.com/The-Shopfloor-Series/book-series/THESHOSER Footsteps = Time = Money. We had one process in which we were able to reduce footsteps 60% just by rearranging the layout of one area of our shop. It has resulted in huge gains, and less operator...
  16. 3d sculpture

First one that came to my mind: http://www.imaginationcorporation.com/
  17. Using currency in a design layout or coupon.

Here's one for you... A couple of years ago, I tried doing something similar. I used a cheapie desktop HP printer, scanner, copier to scan in a twenty-dollar bill. About half way across the bill, the scanner stops and throws up up an error message followed with an Internet link to an...
  18. What to learn before opening my own shop?

It all starts with customers. Contract out all your printing/cutting, and then keep an eye on your books. Once you start paying more than what you could have done it for yourself, then buy the printer/cutter. Don't get me wrong, optimism is a good trait to have, but it can also be...
  19. 48" Application tape machine

Have you done a cost/benefit analysis? Sometimes NOT having a particular piece of equipment is really the most expensive alternative. JB
