The shims are removed after the printhead is torqued, so doesn't need to be plastic. You just need to use the same thickness shim on both ends so that the printhead is square to the vinyl.

Definately not a trunion if you have the nut. A two to three inch wide band of poor print suggests that the printline is not correct. If your going to tear it apart I highly recommend trying to get the service manual for the classic edge.
