60 Minutes on Steve Jobs... aaah that's better!

Last week i posted about a show on the History Channel called iGenius: Steve Jobs. I was very disappointing, it was nothing more than a highlight reel and nothing i hadn't heard a hundred times before. But tonight 60 Minutes, which was entirely devoted to Steve Jobs was great! The first half was on Jobs personally, and in stark contract to the History Channels show...
very interesting and mostly things i didn't know!

The second half, was about the iPad and Autism, also interesting. Interestingly enough, the our first MAC was purchased because there was software to help children with disabilities and it was exclusively MAC. So, very cool all these years later to see the iPad making a difference for the disabled.

I watched that also. Jobs was definitely a strange mix of creative vision, ego and outright meanness. I found the piece on autism and the iPad inspiring.

He was a conundrum that's for sure!

One of the things i found most interesting was, his anti establishment/counter cutler self is what ultimately lead to his demise...
wasting 9 months on alternative medicine rather than modern medicine to initially treat his cancer.

I found the apparent animosity he had towards some of his most loyal people when Apple went public interesting. Denying them the financial windfall that many or all of them were likely looking forward to. And I could identify with his perfectionism resulting in some people disliking him.

thanks for the link Mainframe!

I watched all 4 of those videos & I have a favorite part...

Walter says that he felt like Steve knew people would be talking about him after he died... and some people would have some not very good things to say about him... and this book was a way of answering those folks before they even got to take their shot at him.. (in my own words here)

I love that viewpoint, because it's like revealing all your flaws makes you beyond reproach in a way... not that the flaws become good... because they don't... they are still flaws.. but you can't be hurt by someone revealing flaw you've already revealed yourself..

there was some shallow miscreants here & on another board who couldn't resist taking pot shots at Steve after his death... so this upcoming book thumbs his nose at them and basically says "yeah.. big deal... " and that is pretty cool in my opinion...

My mother works at a school for children with special needs and they exclusively used macs up until about 5 years ago when our school district began providing IT support for computers running windows only.. and wouldn't allow the macs to be hooked up to the network.

There was lots of neat software available for their students, including easy to use software that allowed the teachers to program simple applications tailored to each students individual learning needs and goals.

Autism isn't any bigger or different now days, it is the awareness that is out. People used to suffer in silence with these kids & alone and now they have foundations, personal specialized instructors & tools to use. 50 years ago it was a little known condition, now people id it & get the help they need. My family dealt with it years ago & after a huge struggle, things turned out well, but only after much patience, heartache, & suffering. it's like anything else, you gotta live it to know it. I am glad to see the ipad help some of these kids, trust me when you are in that situation, whatever works is great.

Bull, too many professionals have it to their advantage to have your kids diagnosed with this. Look at ADD, a condition way over diagnosed because the teachers can't handle some students. I know that generalizes, but many know it to be true.

Sorry to hijack this thread.

because we don't eat real food.

90% of americans eat 90% processed food...

You are 100% correct ddarlak! I don't want to hijack this thread, so if anyone is interested, I'll start another thread on this topic called "because we don't eat real food".

Trust me Dave, ADD is no autism, & I can assure you , you have no idea what you are talking about!

aaand now, back to our show...

i wonder if Steve Jobs' dad found out who is son was watching 60 Minutes last night? sounds like the guy would have loved the bragging rights that titd bit of info would have brought him in his hay day. i don't think anyone should be judged for they handle wanting or not wanting to meet their birth parents... but i kinda like they way Jobs chose not to meet the guy.

was anyone else surprised to find, for as private as he was, that he lived in a house that anyone could walk up to and had no hired help?

on the subject of Jobs being a self-absorbed SOB, it sure wasn't success or money that made him that way... it was just his nature... but it sure as hell worked for him and it worked for you BAD APPLES too... whether you like it or not, admit it or not... your life is different today than it would have been had Steve Jobs not been who he was.

all those "so called" stolen ideas, would NEVER had made it to your home or office...
and they ARE there, even if you've NEVER touched an Apple product.
