700w OMAS / Printer feed help

So i’m using a unique material (it’s literally the material that i wanted this printer specifically to print on). First six months it works great but over time ONLY this material starts messing with the printer in a couple horrible ways.

Important point: it’s very shiny. the back is normal white. not plastic.

First, if i load assisted half the time it’s clear something is wrong. It’ll feed backwards fine but not forwards. When i try and print it won’t feed forward at all and the print will just stay in the same area the whole time.

I’ve tried disabling OMAS but it’s not fixing the issue.

Also sometimes if i load manually. When it’s starting to print it will unload the material right before the printing starts and then the printer will start printing with no material in it. Again it only happens with this material.

I know OMAS scans the back. Is there another sensor that scans the front that might be the issue? I’m sure it has something to do with the material being so shiny but again it worked for six months no problem.

Would love some help. HP could only tell me to disable OMAS.

Just thinking out loud here, did you go from sample rolls to full production rolls in this time frame? Go from 30" to 60" or anything? If so, you may try slicing down or spinning off some material onto another roll and do some test printing.

Oh ya, forgot to mention another issue. so no, these have always been the same size rolls. But they’re only 25” wide. can’t do the advance calibration with material that small.

Any way to do something like apply transfer tape or laminate while loading, remove or sacrifice that amount, to at least get the OMAS to read appropriately?
It might help to name the material.

Is it still under warranty? If so call HP. They will have you do a couple of tests. I have similar issue and when we ran a test I threw some kind of sensor error. Part are here now to replace next week.

Figured it out. Turning off OMAS in the substrate settings doesn’t do anything. you need the tech code to go into the deep settings and turn off OMAS there. That and an alignment got it working perfectly. I didn’t have the code until now but mine was 2703 in case future printers need it. I restarted the printer as well for good measure as it didn’t work right away.

Hah, ya explaining this to hp wasn’t fun, (message above) but for shits and giggles i’m using Griff holographics. I know it’s not technically a printable material but it’s the only way to get a good price on holos that are able to be laminated for my bulk sticker site. Any other brands i’ve tried have been comparable.

It's very important to clean the glass on top of the OMAS regularly and properly. Always take it out and pull it from the frame cleaning both sides completely.
Otherwise you get all these problems with the loading etc. because it's looking for the leading edge but thinks the dirt on the glass is the material.
