A little rant

Unless I missed something in your essay, that's just as ugly and completely illegible.
That's the point... they don't get good design if they don't pay. But they get something, instead of me just printing what they brought in. A "F-U Logo" for not allowing me to do my job, but you think you know better. And they end up liking it, and I'm laughing all the way to the bank.

But wait............ based on your 20 designs a week at $5k a pop, this little 3 minute design only gets you $41 for design time. How is that laughing all the way to the bank ??

Besides, aren't you the one who said, you wouldn't let anything go out your door that wasn't top notch and made fun of me for describing what you are now referring to ??

Those are from 2007, when I was a regular sign shop taking anything and everything. I'm now a Design Studio, only take on work that I like to do. But yeah, I am fast enough to do that many designs. However, I'm not that busy because I'm not seeking to be that busy. I'm paying my bills, I have zero debt... so I'm happy. You estimated my earnings potential. But I never said that I do that many quotes. I merely said that I tell my prospective clients that I take a design fee of $5k, and list out what they get for that. Not all are takers, but some. And that feels really good to know my stuff has value now.

It's OK to reinvent yourself every few years. Especially when you get bored, or burned out.

(I don't recall actually making fun of you or anybody... I'm snarky if the tone of the thread is such. But if you felt I made fun of you, then I apologize. That's not what I'm about)

It's actually really interesting to see client's reaction to the F-U Triangle... I mean look how simple this was. But the layperson this is "Awesome!" and they love it. Sometimes I just shake my head, because I realized something a long time ago. You only have to design something that is better than what they had envisioned in their mind. And that's not hard. Could I charge $5k for this. Obviously not. But I might have taken $250 for it, if they really liked it, and all it really took me was 5 minutes.

But I don't have walk-ins anymore.

I did the swoosh for a guy who wanted to help design his sign and I dotted the "i" with a star :Big Laugh:Big Laugh. I also downloaded a crappy free font called Yikes and used that. he loved it and I laugh when I see it as it has it all, swoosh, stupid star dotted "i" and crappy font.

Hey, well sometimes that's all you need to do. I even sometimes get all full of myself as a designer and forget that I only have to meet the client's needs... not pad my portfolio with awesomeness every time out the gate.

My folder is called "c*nt".
The file names all end with the C word. I have Big C, Ultra C, Stinky C Stupid C etc etc.
One day a customer actually was looking over my shoulder while I was working and I prayed the whole time that he wouldn't see that his file name was F*cking C*nt.

There have been times that we have taken on the customer's ugliness.

Years ago, the downtown assoc wanted 80 or so pole banners with pictures of
buildings from back in our town's early days.

The overall design was terrible. But, we did them.

As a form of protest however, I put a picture of me in the 1st grade on all
that I could.

They were happy and I got a laugh.

When I was in trade school we printed the school newsletter and used to place pictures of Chong in the photos, make the heart rate monitors flat line in pics of health students, and write insults on the monitors of pics of the technology students who were our rivals. Good times. We got caught a couple of times, but never stopped.
