A Promise to Dad and Myself

James Burke

Being a grandpa is more fun than working
Long before dad's passing two weeks ago, I had been doing a lot of thinking.

Things really settled in this morning when I disposed of his 25+ medications he'd been on. The majority of the meds were for self-inflicted maladies due to a sedentary lifestyle, poor eating habits, etc....

As I watched the meds burn in the wood stove, I made a solemn and respectful promise to him (and myself) not to follow the same path.

Good for you, I'm sure he would be proud. Always better trying to fix things with diet and exercise. Not a big pill popper myself

James, so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. I read your other post and should have said something then, I just couldn't think of what to say. I did appreciate that you had written about how you had the opportunity to lovingly clothe him and care for him before you laid him to rest. How nice! I was in awe! How great! I lost my Dad as a very young child, lost my Mom just a few short years ago. I believe they are always with us in spirit, at least that brings me comfort. May that bring you comfort as well!

Very sorry to hear about your loss James... I just found out reading this post. I so respect the "ceremony" you did with the meds and I absolutely love your attitude about not following the same path. It is great advice for anyone and everyone. My mom just turned 80 and she is on about as many meds as your dad was... and I know in my heart that it's the meds that are aging her beyond her years. Thank you for this post... it had to be hard. It's a great reminder not to take our health for granted.

I'm sure your dad would be proud as parents want for their children to have a better life than their own. sounds like you are heading down a better path for yourself

sorry for your loss james - when my grandparents passed I found a local chuch that collected non expired meds and with a doctor they gor redistributed to those lesss fortunate. just a thought for others in this position. since leaving the prison environment I have been able to eliminate all my meds and am gratefull to be off them. keep the inner peace brother
