A touchy subject

3Dsigns

My Wife has been surface painting these two signs. We had to set them up in the office and showroom to paint because it's the cleanest room in the shop. When customers come in, they just have to tap them with their fingernails so my Wife put up this friendly little sign on the one which is completed. The sign is aimed right at the entrance door so you can't miss it. Some guy comes in, had to have seen the "do not touch sign", but immediately goes over to the unfinished sign and begins tapping on it with his fingernails. So I had to tell him "don't touch it!". Can someone give me a hint as to the reasoning behind this seemingly universal compulsion? I do have samples of HDU on the sales counter just for the purpose. I mean, I once had a man trying to SCRATCH a customer's new dimensional sign with his fingernails. Reacting in disbelief, I scolded him soundly, he left in a huff and never came back. I have felt like handing them a hammer and chisel next time saying "here; if your fingernails won't get the job done, try this"

DIY Printer Fixing Guide
People simply don't read. We run a small FedEx ship center, a glorified drop box, in our building. We put a giant sign up saying, "Already have a label? Put your package in this area and it will ship today." and another one, "We cannot scan QR codes." Guess which two questions we get the most?

A showroom is for showing things off, hence the name. People wanna see what things are and how they feel. Making the place into a do not do this kinda place is kinda self-defeating to the place.

I've often said, people DO NOT read signs, notices or anything else..... that's why our job is to make them VERY noticeable. However a silly looking sign while might be pleasing to you, it's just a silly sign. People don't pay attention to 'wet paint' signs either..... construction sites, school zones and they all have huge flashing lights and bright colors. Nope, ya hafta find a better place to do your work. Seems you wanted to show off the sign and it backfired on ya.

So now you're judging my motives. wow!

Man who touches printers inappropriately.
You did post this to receive feedback, sometimes it comes back in forms we dislike. That said, the more vulnerable things are to being touched in a public place, the more layers of protection are needed. Maybe mark off a corner for look-don't-touch stuff, or some sort of a barrier, etc. Most showrooms I have seen, hands-on seems to be the name of the game, and physical obstacles beat signage every day of the week.

Well, how do the rules apply and what do the moderators consider "dislikeable forms" of feedback?
  1. Flaming is the act of posting messages that are deliberately hostile and insulting, usually in the social context of a discussion board on the Internet. No FLAMING of other members. Harassment of fellow board members will not be tolerated and may be subject to immediate banning. The Signs101 Moderating Team reserves the right to remove offensive posts without notice.

Just call me Chester.
Maybe put a sign that says under construction or wet paint or something more dramatic.

When I was doing golf course construction, one owner wanted to put a sign that said

Caution, Digitaria Sanguinalis

To try and keep golfers out of an area. Now they would just google it but back then bag phones were popular.
It just means crabgrass but sounds a lot worse.

Judging your motives...... Nope, not at all. I believe I gave you some very good pointers and you focused on the part that hit home, so I believe there is some truth behind it..... JUDGING by your stance on it.

As for your dainty complexion, I'd venture to say, be more specific when asking for hints how to do things and tell us you cannot tolerate anything that isn't sugar-coated. Unlike you, who scolded customers and not have them ever return to the title of this thread............ a touchy subject, it appears you were not kidding when you said 'touchy'. :sleepin:

There you go again. Actually, I said in my original post "We had to set them up in the office and showroom to paint because it's the cleanest room in the shop", so you essentially called me a liar. What got me was that someone could be so hateful as to take little digs at someone who they don't even know, has done him no harm at all, and could actually be a potential friend. But I just consider that the internet is full of trolls and you seem to be one. So carry on, it makes no difference to me."who scolded customers and not have them ever return to the title of this thread". You weren't there, the man was inconsiderate enough to try to damage another customer's expensive property. I guess you might reprimand me If I took a few scratches on something of yours, like a new car for instance.

Ha.....my last post before Christmas and it's most helpful, but you still wont see it that way.

There's no need to set up a work space in a heavily trafficked area, unless you're trying to impress someone(s). Room or no room, you find the space in the shop, not the front frickin' office. Ya simply put a tarp over it when finished. I didn't see or hear mention of liar until you just brought it up. Why are you so sensitive ?? You're correct, I don't know you, but you seem to be doing things backasswards. As far as harm or possible trolls, why are you so much into name calling in your several posts lately ??

For what it's worth, we do tons of sandblasted and carved sign all year long and never need to put a sign (or signs) in the showroom. We have over 10,000 sq ft and about 500 sq ft dedicated to showroom space. If ya don't have the room, find it and keep work works areas separate from customer areas. You're the lost number in this case, not someone pointing out your shortcomings.

On a serious note, for some prints, I welcome potential customers to try destructive things with prints. Wouldn't be too crazy for me to show people a print and hand them a chisel to try ink adhesion for themselves. Guess it just boils down to organization of a shop, sometimes it's good to just shut things down for a day or two and clean up space, knock out the dust and air things out to make room.

Quit buggin' me
Set up a small area on the veranda, porch, or under a pop-up tent out front and populate it with scraps and samples of your 3D Work.
Put up a 'Sign Petting Zoo, Please Enjoy' poster and let them go at it.

I briefly worked at a Dollar Tree store in high school back when there whole schtick was "Everything's $1.00". BIG signs all over the store saying that. It was practically the name of the store.
Of course the most commonly asked question was.... you guess it, "How much is this?".
Me, being me I would respond with "go see if there's one on the shelf with a price tag on it (nothing had them of course). A minute later when they came back to the register to report that none had prices, I would simply respond with "Oh, it must be a dollar then". True story.
(Also my manager thought it was absolutely hilarious and actively did NOT discourage my practice :roflmao: )

QR code customers around me, say that 800 number says I have it. They get mad at us, once we tell tehm that is not true. So even verbal no. Wouldn't help either with signs!
