Adobe file sizing?

Is there any way of reducing the size of a file while keeping the quality?

I have the CS4 suite, and that includes the Adobe Distiller which reduces the file size tremendously, but it seems like the quality gets compromised!

Is there a certain settings I should have in place?

how about telling us what kind of file, and what you need to do with it, and the goal in reducing size

Sorry for being vague. I mostly work with .ai but it would be nice to know for a .psd as well! The goal now is to send it out to be printed (large format) and I was thinking it would rip faster once I have my own printer as well!

And the settings I was refering to would be in the Adobe Distiller.
