Am I at fault? Or is this guy just being a little too picky?

So I had this customer back in October contact me from Canada about some decals he wanted made up for his Dodge SRT10. He sent me a file and just wanted them made into decals. No biggie I thought as the file was easy to vectorize. He just now contacts me back yesterday after months, stating the decals are non symmetrical and he would like them to be remade correctly. I explained first off why wasnt this addressed months ago? And secondly that the file provided by him was vectorized the way he sent it to me. He wants to know what I am going to do about the "problem". I have circled in red what he is complaining about. I think it is rediculous. His answer is "its going on a $48,000 truck". What would you guys tell him?

ahhh heres what happened. Candaian dude was very please with your decal. One of canadian dudes friends came over and said "those points dont match"...and now it's on!

I guess ask him to make sure the art he sent over is the exact on both sides and then tell him your sorry you cant redo these

I think he's being pretty petty and rediculous. But, if it's just a couple decals, I'd just re-cut them to get him off my back.

Make sure he signs off on the art before you cut it this time then this won't happen again.

Unfortunately I do not have the original art and am waiting on him to resend it to me so I can look it over. As for an approval, no. He sent the file and said I want this logo made as decals. Vectorized and cut.

Then I woud say yes it is your fault! You have nothig to defend your work! And always have the customer sing-off on artwork(redraw or not)!

Our standard terms of service actually talks about this, but since few read it, I have a second signature line on our receipts that says in large red bold letters:

"If you sign here, you acknowledge you are not paying for a proof image. Any spelling, grammar, symmetry, color or size errors will not be refunded." And I make them specifically sign it.

Still, on a small job like this, my immediate answer is to just replace it, ask for the original back, print a new second one for myself, and put it up on the wall and say "This is why you pay for a proof image" under it.

Unfortunately I agree. I do think the guy's being an a**hat and a little picky (really, he's got to throw out there it's a $48k truck, really? really?). But you didn't get a signed proof, so you don't have much of a leg to stand on unfortunately. I'd just fix the art, recut and mail him to him and hope he never calls you again, it'll be easier than fighting with him for the next 3 months (anybody who feels it necessary to point out his pickem-up truck cost $48k wants to fight).

This is exactly what happened, you have 2 options, either tell him to hit the road, or suck it up and fix it and send him new decals.

Also, the maple leaf pictured is not the same leaf as from the flag.

Ok Ill resend him some new ones. Lesson learned. Thanks guys!

Before doing this I would have him send me the artwork, I would redraw it send it to him to approve then cut and mail! Now make sure you keep all the correspondences for this!

How can you be sure he doesn't just want a couple free decals for his buddy? I'd say "Sure, I'll replace them. Bring in your vehicle. We'll remove the old ones, and replace them on the spot."

Also, maple leaf behind the Viper mark? Lame.

One ironclad rule in our shop - ESPECIALLY with client supplied artwork - NEVER print or cut anything without an approved, signed proof. People never seem to understand that it may look good in powerpoint or jpeg, but looks AWFUL when you vectorize it.

The file is in an email, but for some reason when I access it, it shows up as a blank square. I usually keep every file on my hard drive, but for something this small I thought nothing of it and deleted it.

Ah, ok. Still seems like too much effort for a small time job. Especially such an old one. I do have to agree with everyone on the signed proof though. Rock and a hard place I'm afraid.
