How to do this effect in Illustrator or where I might find vector to something similar? Or at least a tutorial how.

Besides PATHFINDER to make the shapes....
Looks like TRANSPARENCY - namely MULTIPLY and/or some percentage of transparency
as well as EFFECT > STYLIZE > INNER GLOW and maybe even a gradient or 2 with MULTIPLY on.
