bad day fishing beats good day workin'

i have next to no experience salt water fishing, but as i was at the jersey shore on vacation this past week with my little 18' boat. I headed out to the Cape May rips and found a party boat and some smaller boats fishing there at the tide change. not too far away i saw a bunch of dolphins splashing and flying up out of the water - they were fishing too. i kept an eye on the party boat, and followed him around a bit. everyone eventually left but me. Thats when something grabbed the rubber minnow i was jigging off the bottom. After it stripped half the line off my reel I stopped the reel with my thumb and this thing began to PULL THE BOAT . All i could think of was Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. i was a little nervous. it was still pulling the boat. then the line snapped, which was probably a good thing! So, i didnt catch anything but it still beats working!

Hey Auto.....if you go again get some live eels and use a #2/O hook and drag them over those rips. Great way to catch stripers/rockfish. You may have hooked a shark or a skate.

IMO cow nose ray. THey hook up and swim away fast enough to strip your reel in seconds. And, there have been a ton of em around. Of course, there are a lot of 4-6' brown sharks being pulled boatside on jigs and gulp, too recently.

Glad you found the rips. you were in the right place!
