Banner Rentals

As I don't have much time at the moment I didn't read the whole thread...
Sometimes for really cheap customers (or mother in law who needs a "banner") I'll just use cut vinyl, weed it and roll it up, and hand it to the customer. No x-fer paper, they just unroll the vinyl and pin it to the wall. You can reverse cut/weed the letters if they want a colored background with white letters.

I don't think banner rental would be worth the trouble tho.

yup thats what I have done inb the past....so what if you see avery logos through the paper, it's still cheap...

as to this rental business......no thanks..... First of all for 10 bucks the administration of the job just sucked it all up. What happens when the banner comes back and it is scratched or just changing the date or age can be a hassle with glue residues.
I am not saying you shouldn't do it, you know what you can or cant do and make it worth your while, and if you don't you will learn.

I still see those rental storks out there for new borns or even the lawn with 40 pink flamingos.... but they cost a lot more than $10.00

I bought a guys business that had 17 generic pre-printed banners that said 4 - Happy Birthday. Now Open, Grand Opening, Congratulations. Never thought about them much until one of my cousins wanted me to make a banner for his sons bday. I gave him one of them and 2 people asked where he got them. Told them I rented them to him for $15 a day 2 day minimum. Next thing I know, I have people calling me to rent them.

I only accept Credit Cards on the rental and I put a hold of $100 on the card until the banner is returned then I charge the $30. Every week, at least one is being rented. Usually put the 30 bucks into my kids bday party fund/Christmas fund.

We have done the same thing for years and called it an "instabanner"
Used 15" vinyl and charge $4.50 per linear foot, most were 4 to 6 feet.
 
What kind of liability would there be?

But I guess it takes all kinds of people to make up this world.. they have some really stupid warnings on some products thanks to someone :Big Laugh

All it would take is a good gust of wind to blow it on to someones car or some stupid kid to somehow poke his eye out and that would be an instant lawsuit.

I'm not sure but I lean to the original thought. If they are premade, if they are readily available in the showroom so people can be directed to look through them and limit the time taken then why not? Pick it out, drag it to the counter and complete the sale, done.

Return visits, comments to friends / neighbors? Who knows?

Karma can be a horrible thing. OK maybe the lady in question has contacts. Maybe she mentions your products and it turns into a business relationship down the road with her employers.

10 bucks, is it worth it? What are the particulars of the poster's market area? What are the average incomes? What are his particular overhead costs?

Okay, he's based in a big city, he can chase countless customers and still have countless people behind them. We are in a small community and word of mouth is everything. It might be a hidden home run. IF, IF it is a quick hit sale then where's the harm? Not everyone has to generate 1000.00/hr to cover costs, and if you are in that type area the input is irrelevant. DON"T HANG ME but our personnel market could actually profit from such an idea.

We have seen the big city mentality purchase local small town businesses and settle in. They laugh at the previous owners practices and mock the way things are done....guess what. Their big plans of teaching the locals becomes a lesson in how things work on a smaller scale. Every single time.

There is not a one size fits all plan. Seems the customer didn't need a $1000.00 logo design, business cards, a full minivan wrap and 10 billboards but just a banner for a splash. Maximum ability is not always required. Generate some traffic, the whole economy pothole, I applaud the reninvention mentality. Being stagnant is a recipe for failure.

I was liking the banner the guests could sign though, might be a great upsale tool for the next visitor. Maybe even rental vs purchase premade banners? Maybe you could hire someone to make a sign for it in your space, lol? Just offer the rental or purchase option for the identical banner already on the rack.

and we now return to your regularly scheduled program........

Great vision and thought! Anytime you can "rent" a banner or sign, go for it (if the market demands it!) Our company has thought about this many times but failed to take action. You're motivating me to try it. We're in a heavy tourism area, so I'm sure we could rent banner stands, trade show displays, etc.

Think "rent a center" model!

The LED hype is starting to die down. LEDs just don't offer the amount of light a neon unit can. And you can't do exposed with LED even though places like Sloan have tried. There is also a lot in the way of repairs to existing neon. We have a job refurbishing an older neon sign for 1/3 the price every one else wants to retrofit LEDs in. Lots of blowers are gone and lots of shops have stopped doing it. But when you look around at LED signs after a while when they start going out and you have hot spots it just doesn't look good. Everything has its place and neon is simply a better fit than LED in some places. Price is about the same when you compare neon to primium LED in liniar feet. Electrical savings aren't that much so the "green" factor becomes moot. Even cold cathode is making a come back after people noticed for the colour temp and light output of LEDs just weren't as good.

I like that frame system.

Why are you wasting your time with $10 a day banner rentals then?

If you are an Ace fabricator and Neon expert you should have far more important, more profitable things to be doing with your time. If you are busy earning decent profits from "proper" projects these banner rentals would cost you a lot more than $10 in wasted time alone.

I suspect from your postings that you specialise in cut-throat pricing right across the board... with the inevitable consequence of being forced to scratch around looking for money. If you are winning neon illuminated channel letter projects by under pricing by several thousand dollars then you are clearly throwing your profits down the drain... stop doing this and you won't need to conjure up a $10 a day banner rental scheme to replace the profits you should have earned from neon work but instead frittered away

I have a list of "competitors" who I have no hesitation in referring people to when they say they can't afford it, or when I feel they aren't happy with my pricing. Not saying they are bad people - hell, we've all been in those shoes at some point?! (most of us I think anyway..).

Be honest and tell them what u need to charge to keep your shop open - yes, it's your right to charge enough to stay in business... surprise.

If you really wanna help your client, help them by doing an internet search for an online seller who sells banners for less than a quarter of what you charge. Better yet, teach them how to google - and get them outta your shop asap.

I am surprised almost everyday by the people who grimace at the thought of paying a reasonable price for anything...actually I'm more pissed off than surprised. These are the same folks who will spend hundreds on print advertising and then balk at the same price for a handful of yard signs. For the people that ask if you can do better on price, have a list with all your suppliers, electric company and so on, hand it to them and tell them if they can get all the people on the list to give YOU a break you'll see what you can do. Just thought I'd add to the tally on the "off topic" side of the list that Bill started.

It's not cut throat pricing. It's called reasonable pricing. It's not wasting profits when you price to a point where you make money where others couldn't and take the job.

Maybe its just the Japanese mind set I have that says its better to make $1 a million times over than it is to make $900k once.

And why do you assume I am the only one working? It's not like I'm all alone. $10 isn't a waste of time. But hey if you are above making money thats your flaw. I see opportunities to make money and take it. Thats why I have 2 businesses. Apparently I know a little bit of making profit.

And $10 may be too cheap I'm not stuck on that price. As with all things new there is a feeling out process.

I have thought about the rental thing also and do like the idea but you have to set a better pricing structure and also have some kind of signed contract to protect yourself. $10 is just way too cheap in my opinion.
