Best Practices of Combining Typefaces

I pay attention to what works (and what doesn't) in all kinds of design. It's kind of a nerdy obsession. One thing I have never been able to wrap my head around is why some font combinations work... and others don't. When you want to combine fonts, what should you consider? Where do you start?
