Business good or bad - how will you handle the new Paid Leave law?

Business is bad for people right now since Black Thursday a week ago. I myself am still very busy, but this new thing is throwing me for a loop.

I have multiple employees and I don't know how in the world I would handle this:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/qualifies-paid-leave-under-coronavirus-185743624.html

My current policy is if you are sick a day or two, take off and you'll still get paid. I don't have anyone abusing the system (when I did I moved them to another department and took 3 days away to parttime), but I can't handle that being a semi-permanent 12-weeks. What then? unemployment?

There is know way that I would be able to pay employees in my small business without getting being reimbursed. Our margins are tight enough to make a little bit because of our working employees. If I have to pay people and not have any benefit of work, I won't have anything to sell, yet i still have to pay?

My reimbursement would be not paying payroll taxes (tax credit).

This is absolutely nuts and seems like the government is trying to take over everything. They create a panic and then we are required to follow the rules and beg for help from them?

We seam to be descending into a slave master plantation mentality. Maybe the south will untimality win after all.

I will not partake in this offer, I feel there are others that will and they dont need it. Everything is going to be fine and back to normal in no time. Great time to catch up on to do lists at home or purge the shop of all useless junk

I don't think this is an offer. It looks like a mandate and a government takeover. Alternative seems to be shutting down your business.

I don't buy into conspiracy theories....but it sure does feel like we're heading in to a socialist takeover. Something bigger is behind all this.

Just got off the NFIB (National Federation of Independent Business) webinar explaining the new law. Here is the slide set with particulars starting on slide 9. Worth a look. If you do not belong to NFIB you should consider. They represent small business and are very effective lobbying for small business, offering resources such as this.

PS - You don't have a choice whether to participate in the new FMLA/sick leave or not, so you might want to get educated to make the best of it.

There is a hardship provision, if you dont want to or cant participate then go that route. Nothing stops you from laying anyone off either which will likely happen well before any of this. I don't personally see anything wrong with this at all. It is all 100% reimbursed so why all of the crying about helping out your employees. Would you rather they get financially ruined?

This is only reimbursed in tax credits from what I understand and they won't reimburse all of it:

  • Pay Capped at the following levels:
  • $511 per day and $5,110 in the aggregate per person for qualifying reasons (1), (2) and (3).

  • $200 per day and $2,000 in the aggregate per person for qualifying reasons (4), (5) and (6).

1. The tax credits for qualified wages are capped at $200 per day and $10,000 per calendar quarter per employee.

I am personally confused about how to pay the employees and then cash credits. Why don't they just pay the employee directly instead of forcing me to? It seems I could be left holding the liability bag.

The tax credit matches the employees max benefit as far as I know.
For the credit, you take it from your payroll deposit and then they send a check for the difference if there is any. Theyre hardly testing anyone so the odds of any employee even being able to use this is slim. Im sure that they will require proof of it being covid.

I would say that they would want proof. Statewide, there is something similar in the works here and they require proof and also a certain level of income as well, so it really has to be shown that there was a significant financial burden.

I never thought of that angle. They might need proof that this was COVID-19 rather than just being sick and calling in?
Yes. Its useless when people cant even get tested. Florida setup an sba bridge loan program for small business effected by this thats 0% for 12 months then goes to 12% interest. Thats hardly helpful.
The cruise lines and airlines are going to get the real help.

Lots of folks will agree with you, but
I know that things will not go back to the way they were. Yesterday is done.
In a month or so, we'll be worse, worse.
By the fall, I think .. we'll see lots of draconian laws. They will make forced religious laws, which violates the conscience. Heavy penalties.

The End of all things is at hand. Not being dramatic. I just started getting social security too. If the world is still standing in 3 years, I'd be surprised.
