To add, every time I load a roll I subtract a foot when I put in how much was written on the roll, and when I record what is left before taking it back out, I subtract a foot then as well. Depending on how many times a roll has been loaded and unloaded - I often have a roll with about 20 ft but it says 4ft. That's when I will measure it to see just how much I have.
