It's better to have two hands than one glove.
I also used to have two land lines, one for a fax and one for actual talking. The fax line was connected to the fax modem in my office computer and worked just fine.
I realized that I sent a lot more faxes than I received so I dropped the second fax line and connected the single house line to the fax modem as well as the bevy of telephones in the house. I merely turned off the 'Auto Answer' on the fax . I can still send a fax whenever the spirit moves me, just scan whatever it is and print it to the fax printer that I created [Start->Settings->Control Panel->Printers and Faxes]. If I want to receive a fax, I have to know it's coming and turn on the Auto Answer feature. Not a big deal.
Costs me nothing and completely serves my needs. The only difference between this arrangement and the two lines is that I have to turn the fax on in order to receive. Sending is exactly the same with two lines or one.
