Can I use Mimaki 20/20 ink in Roland sp540i

I ordered ink from Grimco (20/20 inks) for my Roland sp540i, like I normally do. I accidently ordered Mimaki ink (instead of Roland inks). Can I use Mimaki ink in my Roland? Both cartridges look the same.

To start, the printer is not likely to recognize the chips on the cartridges. I would suggest seeing if the supplier will swap out the inks.

I will say, NO. Mimaki ink most likely is UV, Roland is solvent.

The 20/20 ink for Mimaki that comes in cartridges is solvent ink, not UV. In addition to the printer probably not recognizing the ink chip, the Roland is an eco-solvent printer. As there may be other differences, such as viscosity of the ink, this may cause unknown issues, as I would think the software algorithms that control the firing of the printheads may be different for solvent (Mimaki) vs eco-solvent (Roland).

If they are both using solvent inks and Epson print heads, the ink will be safe to use, but there maybe a color shift. I have a Mutoh 1204 using OEM Mutoh inks and mimaki inks, you will have to move Roland chips.

I would not try it.
What I can say for sure is, the printer will do a cleaning after every 30 carriage scans.
(Not if you run it in service mode...)
But, you don't know the chemical compatibility of the two inks. It could clog your heads instantly and permanently.
To avoid this you would need to flush the system, before installing the new ink.
And as said before, print quality may be substandard because of driving waveforms and timing.
Don't do it!

thanks Jim, forgot that they also have solvent printers, it could be worth to try to replace the mimaki chips with a roland chip and try.....

Are you REALLY considering screwing up your rather expensive printer to save a few hundred $$ on the wrong ink?
