Changing pass width within same profile changes color? / Mimaki JV3-160SP

Hey all,

Question for you Mimaki JV3 users: Have you ever experienced a drastic change in color when switching from 4 pass to 8 to 16 within the same profile? Was varying the pass width on a graphic with a large field of blue, and printing in 16 pass it looked almost purple compared to the blue in 4 pass. In other words, as the pass width narrowed, the magenta amount being laid down seems to increase drastically. We've had this printer for years and there has maybe been a subtle color shift between pass widths, but never to this degree. Theories?

Cheers,
Steve

This can happen on any printer, not just Mimaki. Each pass type needs a separate profile. Most canned profiles you download from vendors will be in 1 or 2 pass types, typically a 'standard' and a 'high quality' setting. If I build profiles for a media, I have to do it in 3 different pass settings, usually a 8, 10, and 12 for the HP Latex. So yes, colors will shift if there technically isn't a real profile for the pass setting you choose.

Hmm... Well in Rasterlink, each profile has pass width options - some more than others. The one I'm using has 2,4,8, and 16 listed within that profile. Are you suggesting that these pass widths should be calibrated as their own separate profiles, within which would be just one pass width option?
