Are you running OEM or aftermarket inks?
I'm pretty sure I've heard it doing that extra cleaning if there is aftermarket ink installed. Well maybe it was just outside of printing.
I would also make sure when your PC is sending data it's not arriving too slow to printer.

See attached... Set it to none or whatever time interval you wish to use.

I left my two XR640 Rolands at factory settings. Then manually clean around the print heads and the wiper blade area every two weeks.
