Clear UV LED ink for a 3D effect

just got back from the NBM show in Arlington and one of the vendors was showing how they use their UV LED inks specifically the "clear" ink for a textured effect/dimensional finish.

can this textured / 3D effect be done on any flat printer / ink combination? the demo they had there was only 12" x 24" surface area.

Yes saw that same booth at the NBM,it was a very intriguing concept.

watched them do several samples and it created an AWESOME effect.

what I was hesitant on was the small bed, 12x24 and the speed. It was SLOW!

all in all will be looking further into this

you can build dimension with and UV ink. I have seen multiple passes ran as undercoats then with a final overcoat layer that look just like woodgrain. Its cool stuff, but very time consuming.

Also... does not have to be UV Clear. You can build color UV Ink as well. I have a print of an owl on black acrylic that one can feel the texture of the feathers. Done on our Flora.

It can be done on any UV printer set up with clear/varnish, as far as I know.

I remember seeing the (at that time brand new) Roland LEC UV printer at a show a few years back, and they were showing how you could create the 3D/embossed effect. Pretty damn cool.

I think it boils down to printing multiple passes of clear until it builds up and creates a raised surface.

we have the LEJ640 and we have done this. there is a setting in versa works (i can look it up if you need the info) the amount of passes is determined by how high or how much of a 3D/embossed look you want. we have done some effects for prototype boxes with 1-2 passed and we have done a sign where they wanted raised letters that we went with 4-5 passes. when we looked at the machine the roland guy had a sample of some braille signage and i think he said it took like 10 passes to do that. if you have to do a large qty and it needs to be done quick this is not your machine. final pieces will look great but it will take a long time.
