Ok, I figured it out. I didn't have the rectangle in the front. Works fine if the rectangle is completely within the image, however, if I just want a corner of an image the clipping mask will be the same size as the rectangle instead of a "crop out" of the image. Does that make sense? Maybe it's not a clipping mask I'm after?

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you want, are you talking about that black stroke box in the background? If not and you mean the clipping box isn't the right size, you can adjust as you want, it doesn't have to be a box either, can be any shape. If I'm wrong all around, maybe if you explain what you need to do with it or are trying to accomplish, maybe I can advise better.

Hmmm, I don't want the boundaries that the clipping mask produces. The black box is the actual boundaries of the clipping mask, not only that you'd still have the full image which increases the file size. I'm after a true "cropped" section of the image.

Okay, yes, but that would be a pia task if you had to do it several times.
True, maybe someone else might have a better way, unfortunately I only know how to do it manually, but you only need the 1 clipping mask box, you just need to make it to size or can adjust it. I just typically use the box tool and drag it over the area to make it the correct size before I apply the clipping mask.

Created a script to do it.

if you don't need any of the original image you can also select the image and then on the menu object>crop image. This is destructive so a clipping mask is preferred if you want to retain all of the original image

You giving up on Corel, Myron?
Never! Just trying to diversify. Learning, as I knew already, that things are a lot simpler in Corel. And how the workspace and shortcuts can be fully customized.
Draw a box on top, select both, then press the magical combo of Ctrl(CMD) +7
This is just a quick way to create a clipping mask. Still not the desired outcome as explained before.

Still have to manually set the crop area. Corel can do it with 1 click of a custom icon. And doesn't matter what your shape is. If I wanted yo clip a star shape out of a bitmap but only a partial edge of bitmap, 1 click.

Created a script to do it.
too bad it only works for a rectangular shape. Tried for hours to modify the script to allow use of any shape but....

Select the shape (text, shape or another bitmap), shift select the bitmap, or any other shape, you want to clip from and with one click, you get a "clipout".
Adobe users are stuck on the "clipping mask" thing. Like I explained, a clipping mask will always be the same size of the shape used to created it. And it will contain the full bitmap within it whereby "bloating" the file size further.
