Hello Folks,
I've recently been looking into purchasing a flatbed cutter for my sign / print shop. I'm looking for something that can manage at least 4'x8' sheets of material (aluminum composite, posters, banners, etc.), but the prices machines like the SUMMA and ZUND are way out of budget. I'm also going to have difficulties with support since this has to be used in Guyana, where technicians are not located.

I'm wondering if it would be a wiser purchase to go with a CNC machine. and sacrifice the extra features on the flatbed cutter, but at the same time, reap the additional benefits of using a CNC (woodworking, carving, engraving), while saving a great deal of cash.

What do you all think? Thanks for the advice in advance!

Does your shop do wood work, carving, engraving etc?
if so then yes get the CNC.
IF it doesn't then you're wasting your time.

Check out colex. they're well priced also.

Each is a tool, with its own capabilities, and limits.
The software is another huge learning curve, especially if you plan to do 3D work with a router.
Our router is invaluable, but I've only twice wished I had a Zund.

You can get some similar performance between a flatbed and a router if equipped with an optiscout system, plenty of cnc manufacturers will wrap it into the build price, Laguna had some pretty clear instructions with their stuff. Most CNC systems in the sign level are going to have lots of user serviceable parts, and most manufacturers will help you with repairs if you're buying components through them. I have a ShopSabre that I'm pretty happy with, though my optiscout isn't working currently
