Colorspan can't find home...

I'm going to help a buddy fix his colorspan tomorrow. He says it can't find home. I told him that its home is a dumpster. Anyway what does it use to determine its position? Optics (can fix) or (probably not fixable) magnetics?

Or other possible reasons?
