Huge red flag when someone namedrops like that! I bought my shop years ago and anyone who comes in namedropping an old owner gets pay before production treatment
You are exactly right, another lesson learned! I'm just glad most of my "people" issues are with people who other people have problems with also.

I guess I missed the notification on this thread! LOL! The hats were hunter green with light gray thread - not what I would have chosen. The camo ones were too expensive for him.

I know JBurton will enjoy this new development...

Yesterday my BF came in and saw a hat on the floor and asked if that was the jack-wagon from last week. I said yes! He lifted his sweatshirt up to reveal a tshirt with this guys business name on it...turns out this guys Dad sponsored my BF's trap shooting team! Anyway, as you would expect my story to end, my BF knows the guy and laughed as he described him.... "douche bag" "weird" "tight" "arrogant" "spoiled brat" "never worked a real job", just worked for his DAD at this business, never married, doesn't date (he's 50 but I thought he was 60). He used to shoot trap but nobody liked him and he eventually dropped out. He said don't bother doing anything more for him in the future, he's always going to try and nickle and dime you to death.

My best guess is that the sign shop in his town fired him so that's why he came by me. I'm still waiting for the new hats so perhaps there will be yet another ending...

signheremd - you hit the nail on the head - I should have NEVER said she might let him keep them, it was my own fault for opening the door! Lesson learned on that one!
UGH...the drama continues. So I originally needed 2 hats re-embroidered. Then he brought me 7. There was only 6 in stock so we substituted one. She sends them to me with white thread instead of light gray. I don't do embroidery in-house so I'm not making much on this order to begin with since it's only 14 hats. I would like to just offer a discount on these and cut my losses. If I have to go through sending him a multitude of hat and thread colors and checking inventory on them all and reordering, I'm really in the hole. I know that's the right thing to do but because he was looking for all these free hats, I'm not very inclined to go through all the trouble again. Please advise...

Edit - or should I just offer him the other hats for free and then he has 21 hats for the price of 14 and be done with it?

On principle, I don't like to give money back, for any reason, but like he said, sometimes there comes a point of no return. Don't be rude, just tell him, I'm sorry, but we don't seem to be capable of making you happy, so take these hats at no charge and thank you for your business. Don't get into any discussion other than........ good day, sir. Then, turn around and walk into the back, go to the bathroom..... anything, just get lost and hopefully he'll just go away. If he ever comes back, just tell him....... we can't please you, please try so & so down the street. Thank you.

He has 7 of the hats already and they were fine...do I keep these 7 hats and return his money for those or offer a discount so I can at least recoup some of my money? I can't give too much discount he would still be getting something.

It all depends on what you can afford to keep your sanity. Everytime I get really mad I tell myself that a year is taken off my life expectancy. What's that worth to me? If I'm already mad then it's on, if I'm not there yet but it's coming, I just eat it and the relief that it's all over feels much better than the few bucks in my pocket.
Try to get your cost out of him but cut and run before it ruins the rest of your week.

You can start off with saying, "You got 7 hats you like, I can't redo these other ones so here's the remainder of your $$ back." If he complains and starts wasting time, you can always give him a full refund and show him the front door.

Personally, when I get to the point of wanting to dump a client I give all the $$ back. That way there is NOTHING tying that person to me anymore. They can't claim or complain about anything because they spent no $$ with me. I can only count on one hand how many times I've done it, but when I did it felt good to be done with them.

Gino, there is power in giving money back.. it's a weapon of last resort. A client is easy and less costly to fire. Firing my wife would be very expensive, so I have to keep her around.. besides, those cleaning ladies don't do the kitchen as well as she does.

Aaaas you know, I had these hats, of which seven are excellent, produced by a third party.

I've just been informed that following the recent Pantone renegotiation, my supplier's supply, and so by dint my supplier are no longer able to allowed to supply works using the specific colour thread you have specified. I've heard (though I can not comment on the veracity) that either Disney, oneofthe Cola's, or that DoD supplier, have prohibited the usage of your preferred tint in anything other than their specified usage. As I'm sure you, as a highly experienced cnustomer are aware, this puts the ball in the hand of the third party, and all I can offer you is a refund on the seven hats that I am globally unable to supply to you.

Or put it down to the prevelance of corvids.

But ditch the bugger, take the loss, and go for a Friday night beer when the day's done.

As I needed to.

Wait... Which hats did we burn in that bonfire while toasting with our beer bottles! This math problem is getting over my head.

I think it is time to strike fear into your customers (at least this one):

You would think that if this guy does work for your dad, that he would consider future work from your dad to be in jeopardy due to his behavior throughout this whole ordeal.

Yes, it's the hat guy...I did not burn them yet they are still on the floor at the shop. I thought I should maybe wait until this is all said and done.

People like that, think for the moment, and the moment only. They have no plan of overall action and their only focus is..... the moment. Just like the majority of people here. You'll see someone answer one way and an hour later contradict themselves because they have no basis for anything, but the here and now.
