Good evening,

Can anyone tell me if I can signwrite on this substrate. I appreciate a lot may be down to the base layer (s) but is it worth it? and it needs to take a knock or two (its a security measure on a door)

Many thanks,

Tom

What process are you using? You sign writing. Are you painting?

Not sure what you are asking about base layer….

Security measure in a door? How so?

More information!!! This is like a customer saying “I need a sign”

Signwriting is painting, any board needs a base coats/s if you sheet out a door with dibond for example it becomes more secure, simple really

I don't see how a sheet of any thickness of acm is gonna make a door more secure ?? Maybe against a fire, but not vandalism. Direct painting onto acm depends highly on what you're using for the lettering type of paint.

Dibond does not offer much security. the skin is THIN .012", so it will dent / damage easily
If you want "security" you need to look at a solid substrate, 063" or 080" aluminum

we are not a paint company, so cannot offer comments

OK, the dibond is being used as a substrate for a sign, that's it, the sign will be fixed to the door, inevitably this will strengthen the door, it just will! the question is what base coat is "recommended" before I use acrylic paint to sign letter.

My mistake, I do apologise I have since posted the first question on another forum and the answer is:

The best bond was achieved using Sherwin Williams DTM Bonding Primer and XIM’s UMA ( Urethane Modified Acrylic ) Bonder Primer, followed by acrylic gesso. You could certainly put an oil ground on top of the bonder / primer if you prefer that rather than acrylic gesso. They did not test oils directly on the Dibond. I personally find the polyester surface coat to be far too thin, non porous and slippery to be confident of the bond strength painting directly on it.

I have had excellent adhesion using several brands of acrylic gesso alone, but have not used W&N. In the future I do plan to use the XIM UMA or the DTM followed by acrylic gesso or oil ground. Just trying to decide which one to buy. They run about $50 / gallon.

It will dent if bumped hard enough. I would go with .063 or .080 aluminum sheet. Much more rigid. UV Digital print save you time and money. Last for a good while as long as you don't use junk vinyl.
