Computer Power Required for Versaworks & XR-640

Hey everyone! Hope every is having a great day.

I am looking at setting up a computer for some graphic use, most likely some illustrator/photoshop and a few programs to upsize graphics. Also Versaworks for use with the Roland XR-640.

How does this setup look? I was a little shaky on the graphics card related to this type of work. I went with a solid processor with hyperthreading which should help with anything graphic related.

Is this overkill for what we are looking to do?

that looks fine. I run VW on a duo core pc from like 2005.

Video cards are not a big requirement for digital signage work. It's more for gaming and 3d rendering. You're in good shape.

My biggest suggestion would be to use that computer for your design work, and another for ripping and printing. The rip computer doesn't have to be quite as powerful. The biggest reason for this would be opening large files or doing some large memory jobs and the printer running. It can pause sometimes and that can cause a line in the print. Just my 2 cents. I run VW and also have a XC-540 and an XR-640

Crystalcoastgraphics, so your saying we should have two different computers in order to avoid anything other than Vesaworks causing a stall on the computer and therefore a line or fault in the print?

Yes, the computer you listed in you OP should work fine to get you started with your designing. My suggestion would be to get you a small network hard drive to store your files on, and another computer that will just run VW. You can just pull the files off that network storage device, and rip and print from that computer.

I don't use a RIP for my workflow, but that seems to be the standard thinking when it comes to setup for design and RIP stations to have them separated to different computers.

Although, you don't necessarily have to have a network device to store it. You can setup folders that are shared to other computers across the LAN, doesn't have to be a dedicated storage device. I have worked it both ways, it just depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

I design on a Mac then transfer files to our ancient XP based rig used as a dedicated RIP server.
At some point I would like to mount the RIP server on the printer frame and integrate a touch screen. someday...
