Convoy Banners

I'm quite excited! I got a call to make some banners for the convoy that is taking place in the US. I don't have many details yet but they want them to hang on the highway...so should I use 13 or 18 oz? If they are just throwing them over should I suggest using some weights or something?

I'd consider that short term use, so 13oz should suffice. I'd put a pole pocket top & bottom. Secure the top to something on the bridge and put some chain in the part dangling down to keep it from blowing too much. Otherwise, just bungee the living sh!t out of it and forget about it.

Perfect! I agree on the 13 oz and pole pockets thanks all!

Just started making a few banners for a gallery, and it is kinda fun.

Dumb question: assuming you're not fitting them, what instructions do you give the customer on fixing them?

I can just imagine the havoc of a poorly fitted banner, laden with chain descending from a highway bridge, heading towards, then meeting the window of a cyber truck on auto piglet.

I was thinking that also...I think in this case it might be a good idea to add an item line to the invoice that states something like "We're not responsible for any malfunction or falling banners on flowing traffic if being used on an overpass" and just have them sign it in person or electronically. Of course you can say things like, "in the past people have used dowels and stapled the ends shut or small weights in the corners - gives them an idea without telling them what to do? As long as there's a disclaimer on the invoice I should be OK.

They should be sewn hems if doing something like this. Banner tape will not work...... not at all. Sewn pole pockets have the material wrapped around several times and then at least 2 rows of sewing. The ends should be completely sealed once you put whatever you want for weight to prevent anything from sliding out. A staple will not do it. I'd suggest 2 or 3 grommets on each end to hold the contents in. My suggestions were not haphazardly given. The idea of making such banners are considering the person making them, understand certain portions of safety in order to sell such an item.

People are getting kinda testy about people helping them. Making anything in this industry runs the risk of things going wrong with unforeseen problems, but the obvious should not hafta be explained..... or I didn't think so.

Glad you mentioned the sewing part...rather important

I would use the mesh if they are like overpasses here where they would be on a fence or other barrier with holes in it.

BTW, get your money up front. These things don't last for long and they may run out of funds.

I would leave off the disclaimer, just put something like "5x10 printed vinyl banner with grommets & pole pockets for client to install as they see fit" having a disclaimer on their implies that you know what they are doing with them, and if they are putting them over the highway and it comes down, you could be named in a very large lawsuit.

Leave it off that way you can say you don't know what they were doing with them, for all you know they were putting them on their front lawn.

You better play dumb and say you have no idea what the customer is using them for. Criminology 101: never discuss your accessory to a crime via social media. It is unlawful to lean over or hang anything from a US Interstate Bridge. If something goes wrong, it will be State Troopers and the DOT dealing with the situation, not some good ole boy redneck county Sheriff.

You guys think about shlt too much. Hem tape and add some grommets, collect the check (actually cash only) and call it a day. This protesting crap is stupid anyways. Don't people have jobs? Or friends? Or family? Some sort of life? Or is it all just a look at me moment like everything else has turned into.

I drive pass an overpass everyday that has banners... In the beginning of covid it was healthcare stands together signage, now it's convoy signage.

I always wondered about the liability of it. I can easily see some dumbass trying to hang a 15 ft banner off the side of a bridge not knowing what they're doing and dropping it onto a windshield...

But then I haven't seen anything in the news about it, so maybe it's not as big of an issue as it seems?

And even if they didndonthst and caused a pile up... I don't think you'd be held liable. If you walk into walmart,.buy a gun and shoot up the mall... Can people sue Walmart?

I mean, I'm sure some people would try. But people need to learn to take responsibility for their own actions and not be so sue happy anyways.

I agree with no tape for this - for one.. you never know if it'll be used everyday for months slowly coming apart, or how they'll treat it when they put it up or take it down. Tape is nice, and sure... If it falls down it's not on you, but may as well quote / price out a proper spec for the job and do it right.

I hate the Convey over here in Canada. It's not even that I disagree with what they're saying... But a 2 hour string of cars and trucks honking by my house all weekend doesn't get my sympathy. Shutting down the trade border, screwing over the Truckers who are vaccinated and preventing them from cross... That's also too far. The best part is even if Trudeau caved and didn't force vaccines to cross the border... They can't get into USA because Biden is the one who did it first! So the whole Canada convoy situation is just dumb.

I think most, if not all mandates should be ended.. but when I see our convoy, I don't think these guys are patriots ormfighting for our rights... I think these guys need to find something better to do with their time rather than piss off a huge portion of the population with constant honking and supply chain disruptions.

Again, not sure if the us convoy is different! I haven't heard about us drivers blocking the borders with 100 trucks and refusing to move, so I expect it is. Hopefully you guys are protesting right, and more effectively than our nutjobs!

There's a guy here that stands on an overpass over the interstate damn near every morning and afternoon waving Trump and LGB flags. It's weird. Around the election, a little weird but I get it but 2 years later?
Probably the only thing that gets in the way of his daily agenda of stomping non existent socialism is when he has to take the day off to cash his disability check.
