copyright question

had a guy want to use Bullwinkle moose and told him no as it is material that has a copyright. he said he didn't think so as it has been off air for 30 years. did a search and found that General Mills owns the rights to the TV show but nothing about the image itself. it got me thinking as just where do you go to find out who owns a copyright? I would assume General Mills as they own the right to the TV show but anyone know a site or a source to look these things up?

It's not owned by General Mills, they sponsored it, Dreamworks owns the copyright to it and it appears they are planning on making them into movies, like they did with Mr. Peabody recently.

Dreamworks bought it in 2012, so I'm guessing the copyright is alive and kicking.

Didn't Robert DeNiro make a Rocky and Bullwinkle movie back in late 90s, early 2000s?

Also, a copyright does not need to be 'active' to be protected. It is protected, regardless of visibility in the marketplace, for a specific length of time (what is it, 3,000 years, now?). You might be thinking of a trademark.
