Corel X3 text and extrude feature

I'm working with coreldraw X3, I convert text to bitmap, then hit the extrude button, all my features are greyed out. I know its something simple, what am missing to make this function work?

You can't......

extrude raster images.
Why are you converting it to a bitmap?

Alittle. I like what I see from what I've done. I need to learn more about Corel and use it to its fullest.
