Cutting Magnetic Material

I have a Summa D140 and to this point have only cut vinyl/digital vinyl. Is it possible to cut any magnetic material? Customer wants small quantity of circle magnets.

I have a D160 and I dough it would be able to cut such a material. Maybe it would just make a small cut and the reaming would be cut with an exacto? I've never tried it, but we will see what the other folks have to say...

It is not easy. I would not try it with the thicker car magnetic material. Only the thinner fridge magnet stuff. That being said it is VERY hard on the cutter. I've cut the thinner stuff on our S160T before. You have to get the pressure just right to really only score the material - you do not want it to cut all the way through. Then it's easy to just break the magnets apart. Probably not related but it very well could be - I'm actually getting a replacement x motor in today that cost over $400 for our Summa. You will need to get tables both in front of and behind the cutter to support the weight of the material and to minimize it trying to grab onto the machine. In the long run, it is not worth it on a high end cutter. If we see more demand for it, I'll probably get a made in China junk cutter on eBay and use that to cut it. Much rather wear out one of those. One single motor for my Summa is as much as an entire junk cutter.

Run polystyrene sheet through plotter with 3-4 passes of desired circle size. Pop the now scored circle out of the polystrene. Now you have a guide to use with a sharp x-acto to cut your magnetic. Do it all the time here, works like a charm.
