Dan Antonelli/Sign Craft article

Dan's article in sign Craft Jan/Feb is a must read! we talk aroung here all the time about doing what the customer wanted and collecting the check. those who think this is OK will want to read the article and re-think that. to quote from the article "the more bad work that leaves your shop, the more likely your shop will be known for that type of work" should be a wake up call to all who routinely work this way.

great article Dan!

Right on, Marlene! I just read that article in bed last night. It's a good one and contains a few other salient points regarding allowing the client to dictate things.

I'm glad SignCraft regularly includes articles about the business side as well as the craft side of this crazy trade we're all in.

In all these years of doing this work, I've naturally had customers bring logo's or whatever they've wanted to have had me do them with these unprofessional layouts. It didn't matter how much I begged to 'fix' these things...some folks just want it this way.
Now, from a customers point of view...I'd say "sure". THIS is what you want, and you're gonna pay this guy to put this on your truck.
And from the signguy's point of view, I can't understand how you'd want something like this on your rig. But, hey, if that's what you want...

Now, of course, there's acouple of trucks running around my town, that I DID...with these aweful looking names on the door. The flamejobs I did came out great...but those logo's.....UGHHHHH!!!!!!

I shouldda made him sign a contract that said..."You will NEVER tell another human being who did this lettering job for you, for as long as you live!!" It's too bad too...he's a pretty neat guy.

(pictures withheld on purpose!)

I agree about Dan's articles....they're very educational & informative!!!
(now, if I can apply what I learn....;)

Yeah that was a great read and 100% correct. It is amazing how much more fun the job is as well when you can use some creativity to develop something useful instead of crap that normally comes from a customer. Just turns into to much production work and gets boring!

Thanks,
Kurt

Half the battle is convincing the customer they need some design help. The other half of the battle is convincing the bad designers that they suck and should find another career. Some people just don't have a good understanding of aesthetics. There is way too much crap out there that someone, somewhere is way too proud of.
