never had trouble with this before but for some reason can't get it to work this time. have 3 layers of the same color i want to merge together in one cut and prevent multiple unnecessary cut lines. what are my steps here. i've tried shaping (simplify, weld) and have tried the combine function. getting a fill of the color in the middle where there should be no background. what am I doing wrong??? thanks in advance.

Sometimes it takes a combination of welding, trimming, and combining, in
a certain order to get it right. Hard to say without seeing the artwork.

If it gives you a really hard time try this.
It can all be done within corel.
Color your image the way you want it to look.
Convert the image to bitmap. (make the resolution fairly high, like 200 or 300 dpi)
Autotrace the bitmap.
This often gives a pretty good result.
Make sure you keep your original file, just in case.

Corel

With a newer version of CorelDraw you could use the create boundry command to draw a outline around all the object.
