There is allot of chit chat one Signs 101 regarding hard drive failure and recovery, some good suggestions and some are bad according to the experts.
I found a series of videos by Scott Moulton of Forensic Strategy Services, they run about 9 minutes each and are very informative. I believe all here could benefit watching the videos to better understand why and how hard drive fail, and options to recover the lost data.
Scott has uses a neat trick of purchasing an exact copy of the bad drive and swapping out the circuit boards, without even opening up the hard drive. He says that out of the thousands of hard drives his company has recovered data from, only 15% was related to hardware malfunctions, most failures are attributed to software and often a component on the PC board gets fried by static or heat, and by changing out the PC board you can get the drive to work long enough to recover the data.
After going thru all 7 of the basic videos and if you want to learn more, you can watch the 5 advanced videos. I have viewed all of them, and for the first time have a real good understanding about what goes wrong and how to fix the problem and recover the data. I will be looking for a match to a bad drive I have and use his techniques to see if I can recover the data.
